The Assistant Investigations Editor will primarily be responsible for planning for quick-hit watchdog and investigative stories as part of a new effort to ensure a regular presence of investigative reporting on the front page of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Candidates must be skilled at identifying potential stories, knowledgeable about sources and state and federal open records laws, and capable of juggling priorities and assignments. This person also must demonstrate the ability of helping maintain rigorous standards for fairness and accuracy while meeting productivity demands.
• Demonstrates strong news judgment and clear ability to develop story ideas that are important, relevant and interesting to our readers. • Collaborates effectively with others, including our Atlanta media partners. • Shows proficiency with records and databases. • Uses time effectively, meeting deadlines and producing an acceptable volume of work. • Has ability to juggle priorities and assignments and respond to breaking news. • Shows ability to customize content to any delivery platform. • Shows capacity to identify a range of watchdog topics and quickly gain sufficient knowledge • Demonstrates clear understanding of state and federal laws related to public records • Demonstrates ability to coach reporters and a data expert, working to enhance ideas, reporting strategies, and story conceptualization. • Ensures work is balanced, fair, accurate and complete, incorporating, where appropriate, a diverse range of sources. • Engages editors on best ways to present stories on digital and print platforms.
Minimum of 7 years of professional journalism experience required, including significant investigative or watchdog work. Editing experience preferred.
Proven record of serving audiences in a fast-paced, productive environment that is shaped by research, audience metrics and audience needs in print and in digital
Strong news judgment.
Keen organizational skills
Experience in analyzing and interpreting government databases
Excellent communication skills with a collaborative attitude.
Experience in a broadcast newsroom or a digital newsroom a strong plus; this person will be working in an integrated environment involving print, digital, and broadcast.
