Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Public Relations Specialist II (PRS II) for the Eagleton Institute of Politics. This position reports to the Director of Institutional Planning and External Affairs and is responsible for developing and implementing public and media relations plans for the Eagleton Institute of Politics. The PRS II will further the Institute's mission to focus attention on how the American political system works, how it changes, and how it might work better. In that capacity, the position helps to manage Eagleton's public profile by developing and implementing plans that incorporate traditional and new media, both here in NJ and nationally, in order to increase awareness of and engagement with the Institute's research, education, and public service resources.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Prepares a bi-weekly electronic newsletter, generate/maintain updated website content (including photos, blog posts, and program information), and manages the Institute's official social media accounts to maximize reach and engagement;
Develops vehicles for sharing original Eagleton content and engaging with current news and events related to how the American political system works, changes, and can be improved, including using various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc);
Assists in development and distribution of event and program promotion/recruitment materials to generate media coverage and drive registrations/applications;
Proactively writes press releases and op-ed pieces and pitch these pieces to news outlets;
Serves as the first point of contact for journalists contacting Eagleton and build relationships with journalists representing digital and print outlets, as well as television and radio producers;
Develops and implements a plan for maintaining up to date database records for various audiences including press, elected officials, alumni, program participants, donors, students, and others;
Assists and participates in other Eagleton programs and initiatives, including but not limited to the Institute's public program series education programs
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Digital Communications, Political Science, or a related field
Two years of work experience in the political or communications field, including as a journalist or a communications specialist for a non-profit organization, elected official, or government entity
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must have excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communications skills.
Creativity and excellent organizational skills; detail oriented
Must be able to independently manage multiple tasks and short deadlines in high-stress situations.
Must be proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher), PhotoShop, email marketing tools, social media, and desktop publishing
Demonstrated digital media marketing skills and be able to identify and master new communications tools quickly
Strong interpersonal skills and be comfortable meeting and working with a broad range of people — from high-level public officials to media representatives to vendor staff to students — in a variety of highly visible settings.
Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Must have thorough grounding in U.S. and New Jersey politics and government is essential, whether through coursework, professional experience, or personal involvement. Because Eagleton's research and programs focus on American politics, the PRS II should understand the relevant positions, processes and relationships and be aware of sensitive political issues.
Must be comfortable working for an organization that is political yet non-partisan and straddles the worlds of politics and academia.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Eagleton offices are located within a historic building with no elevator. The duties of this position regularly involve navigating stairs numerous times a day.
