The Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute seeks a Communications Associate to support the growing needs of the research institute and the Health Sciences and Technology campus. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Associate will provide photography, videography, production, editorial, and administrative support in the areas of marketing, publications, publicity, events, social media, and web communications. The Communications Associate will work on daily assignments to develop story ideas, contact sources, shoot short videos, and take pictures for posting to the Virginia Tech News site, the VTCRI homepage, official social media channels, and other platforms. The successful candidate will join a collaborative team in creating and distributing branded promotional multimedia. Specific areas of responsibility include production of creative services deliverables, and continuous advancement of media relations, design and technology skills. Additionally, the incumbent will: 1. Serve as chief photographer for the research institute. Provide professional-quality photography and photographic editing, create photo galleries, schedule photo shoots, conduct photo research, collect photo releases, maintain photo library. 2. Produce branded video and multimedia stories. Coordinate with VTC AV Coordinator and University Relations and Carilion Clinic multimedia teams to build and maintain video library. 3. Contribute to the development and production of the VTC website and social media presence, drafting online-exclusive material, entering images and text in the content management system, and participating in the website redesign. 4. Serve as a video production resource for VTRCI programs such as TBMH and collaborate with University Relations photographers and videographers on university-wide news and philanthropy projects. 5. Provide event support including physical and digital signage and other duties as required.
The position also supports various projects and the incumbent is expected to be innovative, apply creative thinking, and capitalize on opportunities for process improvement and enhancement of business operation. Other duties may be assigned based on business needs. The role requires professional judgment in a demanding, fast-paced environment.

1. Bachelor's degree in communications or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. 2. Considerable knowledge of digital photography/videography, advanced photographic techniques, and professional quality standards. 3. Prior communications experience, especially in photography and production. 4. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team and independently, to work under tight deadlines, and to assume responsibility for accurate completion of assignments. 5. Excellent communications, interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills. 6. Demonstrated facility with computers, and understanding of web development tools.
1. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite software, especially InDesign, Photoshop, and Adobe Premiere Pro. 2. Knowledge of standard office suite software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
