JOB DESCRIPTION -- We seek an ambitious journalist to be the day-to-day leader of a new online news organization based in western Oregon. The managing editor will serve as a player/coach. As coach, you will organize news coverage with two other reporters, monitoring assignments and beats, editing and preparing stories for publication. As player, you will be the lead reporter in politics, taking readers behind the scenes of power and decisions. We expect applicants to lead with sharp organizational skills and by example with pace-setting coverage. This journalist will want to excel, to be an example of today’s digital journalism at its best, and show a competitive streak that is hard to contain.
ABOUT US: We’re a new all-digital organization being developed by Les Zaitz, a two-time Pulitzer finalist and long-time investigative reporter and editor at The Oregonian. He also is turning a rural weekly into a journalism powerhouse, beating national newspapers for major awards, and partnering with outlets like ProPublica to tackle ambitious projects. This is a well-funded, cutting edge startup to serve a metropolitan market in Oregon. The managing editor will report to Zaitz, who is CEO and editor.
APPLY: Send resume, cover letter outlining why you are interested, expectations, and salary needs to: email@example.com. DEADLINE: June 30, 2018.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum five years experience, at least two in editor position, preferably in newspapers. Demonstrated ability to produce clear, engaging copy and to manage social media accounts.
