The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) has an immediate opening for a Technical Communications Specialist. The specialist serves as the communications lead in implementing strategic communications plans and developing content for websites, collateral and other promotional tools deployed to market TMS specialty technical meetings, webinars, and standalone professional development courses. This position is also responsible for implementing strategic communications plans and developing content for websites, collateral, and other promotional tools, to market TMS journals, publications, and technical reports. Additionally, this position researches and writes news and department features of a technical nature for the magazine section of JOM, as well as TMS News and other TMS membership news vehicles.
Serves as communications lead for recurring TMS specialty technical meetings, webinars and stand-alone professional development courses, inclusive of facilitating cross-departmental input, coordinating the initial production meeting to document the timeline of tactics identified in a project’s strategic communications plan, and updating the MarCom e-mail schedule, news and homepage schedule, and other production timelines as projects evolve.
Compiles information and writes all promotional content specified in the strategic communications plans developed for TMS specialty meetings, webinars, and stand-alone professional development courses, inclusive of website content, print collateral, promotional e-mails, advertisements, social media, organizer packets and a broad range of other marketing tools. Coordinates review of this content and collaborates with other MarCom staff in the design and production of the final products.
Compiles information and writes all promotional content specified in communications plans developed to support marketing of TMS journals, publications, and technical reports, inclusive of website content, print collateral, promotional e-mails, advertisements, social media, and a broad range of other marketing tools. Coordinates review of this content and collaborates with other MarCom staff in the design and production of the final products.
Writes news and feature articles for JOM Magazine on technical topics, such as technical meeting overviews or summaries of technical reports. Is responsible for research, compiling and editing content for the monthly JOM Business Update section and the Meeting Headlines section. Also contributes news and feature articles of a technical nature to TMS News and other membership news vehicles.
Compiles, coordinates, edits, and proofs content for at-meeting specialty meeting programs; coordinates with MarCom design team for timely production of these materials, both in print and for online posting.
Updates content and coordinates posting of new meetings on the online TMS Meetings Calendar and Global Meetings Calendar; receives online Global Meetings Calendar requests, evaluates them according to established criteria, and coordinates posting of appropriate ones; develops and coordinates posting of content for meetings operating under co-sponsorship agreements, MOUs or services contracts with TMS.
Ensures the accuracy, professionalism, and quality control of all content produced for assigned campaigns and projects.
Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of new and best practices of promotional tactics and opportunities that can be deployed within TMS.
Tracks and reports on the success of assigned communication initiatives.
Other duties as assigned.
Position includes responsibilities that may require travel.
Bachelor's degree in science or engineering, with evidence of a strong writing portfolio; bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, or journalism with evidence of scientific or technical writing expertise.
Three to five years of experience in communications, public relations, professional writing or related field, with evidence of technical communication expertise.
Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
Ability to work independently, adapt to changing situations, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Strong interpersonal skills and organizational abilities, as well as project planning and management skills.
Evidence of comfort in working with complex, technical content.
Knowledge of association communication issues and practices a plus.
Ability to travel if position responsibilities require.
