<p>The Internal Communications and Public Relations Representative works for the University of Minnesota’s primary public relations office within the Office of University Relations. This position is responsible for helping build and implement strategies in support of a comprehensive internal communications plan for the University’s Twin Cities campus and other campuses systemwide. It also supports public relations and issues management for a variety of University clients.<br /><br />Responsibilities of this position include:<br />Internal Communications (50-60 percent) – Assist in the execution of the University’s internal communications strategy<br />• Work closely with the Internal Communications Manager to create communications plans and toolkits to support internal aspects of communications and marketing campaigns<br />• Develop frontline leadership engagement materials for cascading messages<br />• Produce messages for a variety of purposes (e.g., information, engagement, calls to action) for a variety of internal stakeholders, and for delivery across multiple communications channels<br />• Collaborate with other communications professionals to provide counsel, and to promote internal communications best practices<br />• Work with public relations and marketing colleagues in University Relations and across the University system to identify, research and contribute to content that features internal collaboration and successful employee engagement efforts and can be shared on internal channels<br />• Collaborate with University leadership to craft messages and help execute plans to address, manage and/or influence issues important to the University<br /><br />Public Relations (30-40 percent) – Assist in the execution of media and public relations efforts<br />• Help ensure that internal and external strategies and messages are aligned<br />• Work with other members of the University Relations team, as well as communicators systemwide, to identify and publicize news, accomplishments and achievements that advance the reputation of the University<br />• Manage print, broadcast and online internal and external news inquiries<br />• Collaborate with other University Relations staff to maximize exposure for stories via other communications assets (e.g., University web site, social media, internal communications, etc.)<br />• Research and write news releases, opinion editorials and other media materials<br />• Identify and develop opportunities to help News Service team members and communicators systemwide tap into each other’s insights about media relationships to better inform media outreach strategies and messages, build and strengthen media relationships, and enhance success of media outreach.<br /><br />Misc. Support (10-20 percent) – Assist in communicating best practices across the University system<br />• Support University Relations leadership and Public Relations team in promoting capabilities and expertise of public and media relations, and issues management systemwide, through presentation development and a year-round communications strategy.<br />• Draft and edit communications from University Relations to other audiences within the University community.<br />• Provide leadership around web content and strategy for areas of umn.edu controlled by the Public Relations team.<br /> </p><p>This is a full time, 12 month appointment with benefits. </p>
<p>Required Qualifications:<br />• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Affairs, or a related field plus 4 years of experience; Non-communications degreed individuals must have six years of progressive responsibility in communications.<br />• Experience in internal communications, public relations or communications, including experience developing and executing comprehensive communications plans for large cross-organizational projects and programs;<br />• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills;<br />• Ability to produce clear, precise, well-designed communications materials for a variety of internal and external formats;<br />• Ability to learn quickly, demonstrate critical thinking, and make situation-appropriate decisions using sound news and other judgment;<br />• Ability to build rapport and credibility with individuals at all levels of an organization;<br />• An entrepreneurial attitude, along with excellent time management, organizational skills and ability to work under tight deadlines.<br /><br />Desired Qualifications:<br />• Knowledge of reputation and other issues facing the University of Minnesota;<br />• Ability to deal with sensitive or emerging issues in an open and public environment;<br />• Knowledge of best practices in internal communications and public relations;<br />• Experience working with teams on creative/marketing projects (e.g., project managers, graphic and web designers, writers, etc.)<br /><br />Relationships:<br />• Reports to the Director of Public Relations<br />• The Public Relations team is part of University Relations, the central public relations, marketing, and government and community relations department at the University<br />• Develop and maintain strong, positive working relationships with other members of the University Relations team, and with University staff, administrators, college communicators, and members of the media.</p>
