<p><strong>UMN Job Title:</strong> Pub/Int Rel Comm Consultant<br /><strong>UMN Job Code:</strong> 9786<br /><strong>Working Title:</strong> Communications Consultant<br /><strong>Department: </strong>College of Education and Human Development Communications and Marketing <br /><strong>Reports to:</strong> Susan Diekman, Director, CEHD Communications & Marketing with dotted-line reporting to Alissa Jones, OLPD Administrative Director<br /><br /><strong>Position Overview:</strong><br />The Communications Consultant position is a member of the College of Education and Human Development Communications and Marketing team, and serves as the primary communications consultant for the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development (OLPD). The Communications Consultant is a communications and marketing generalist who is responsible for developing and executing an annual strategic communications and marketing plan for OLPD. The plan will support OLPD goals and provide integration with the CEHD Department of Communications and Marketing plans and initiatives.<br /><br /><strong>Responsibilities:</strong><br />Web and Social Media (35%)</p><ul><li>Lead website content strategy, including writing and posting web content, and collaborating with the CEHD Web Team when department sites need to be created or redesigned.</li><li>Implement strategies to drive website traffic.</li><li>Manage website writing tone and voice, and implement governance standards to ensure content is up-to-date.</li><li>Monitor web traffic and adjust content strategy as needed to maximize audience engagement.</li><li>Review the OLPD social media presence and make recommendations for social media strategy.</li><li>Manage OLPD social media channels, including Twitter and Facebook accounts.</li></ul><p><br />Marketing & Branding (25%)</p><ul><li>Conduct market analysis/research to understand undergraduate and graduate student preferences and behaviors. Research may include holding focus groups, distributing surveys, talking with peers, reviewing literature, and other means to gather best practices.</li><li>Develop and implement a marketing plan to promote the department’s degree programs and meet enrollment and recruitment goals. Strategies and tactics may include developing a marketing position statement and key messages, writing marketing content (e-mail, web, print, social media), collaborating with CEHD’s graphic designer to develop print marketing materials, and attending recruitment fairs.</li><li>Ensure that the OLPD marketing strategy includes multiple touch points to cultivate potential students and move them toward an enrollment decision.</li><li>Manage OLPD brand, including overseeing the implementation of brand standards; and managing writing tone and voice to ensure integration with CEHD and the University.</li><li>Develop marketing campaigns, as needed, to promote OLPD public events or commercial activities.</li><li>Evaluate marketing activities to determine effectiveness.</li></ul><p><br />Internal Communications & Media Relations (25%)</p><ul><li>Develop a comprehensive media relations plan to promote OLPD’s brand and research. The plan may include developing key messages, story mining, developing media relations materials, answering media requests, and pitching proactive news stories—all for the purpose of showcasing faculty research and scholarship.</li><li>• Work with OLPD leaders to create greater visibility for the department’s thought leadership. This may include working with faculty to develop and place opinion pieces, drafting articles for trade journals, or supporting faculty in the preparation of conference material</li><li>Push OLPD news to other OLPD, CEHD, and University internal and external communications channels to extend its reach.</li><li>Write and distribute internal communications, such as newsletters, and emails.</li><li>Compile and report media relations metrics.</li></ul><p><br />Planning & Project Management (10%)</p><ul><li>Working with the Director of Communications and Marketing and the OLPD Administrative Director, develop a comprehensive yearly strategic communications and marketing plan for the department to support OLPD objectives. The plan will include a situation analysis, objectives, audiences, key messages, strategies, tactics, and measurement.</li><li>Consult on committees and work groups in the department to define target audiences and develop strategies and tactics. Provide leadership in these areas, based on knowledge of best practices.</li><li>Contribute to the college-wide editorial calendar.</li><li>Attend the monthly CEHD Communications & Marketing Network meetings.</li></ul><p><br />Communications Metrics (5%)</p><ul><li>Monitor and compile department communications and marketing metrics for the CEHD Communications and Marketing dashboard.</li><li>Use analytics and data to inform and finesse strategy.</li><li>Solicit feedback from current and prospective audiences to refine communication and branding strategies.</li></ul>
<p><strong>Required Qualifications:</strong></p><ul><li>BA/BS degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related field or non-communications related degree with additional two years of professional communications experience.</li><li>Four years of professional communications experience. Non-communications degreed individuals must have six year of progressive responsibility in communications.</li><li>Experience successfully developing and implementing a communications and marketing plan.</li></ul><p><br /><strong>Preferred Qualifications:</strong></p><ul><li>Master’s degree in Communications or related field.</li><li>10-12 years of experience in marketing and communications, preferably in a higher education or public relations agency setting.</li><li>Experience with web applications, such as Dreamweaver, WordPress, Drupal 8, and others.</li><li>Demonstrated understanding of content strategy and website governance.</li><li>Experience with HTML, CSS, and RSS feeds.</li><li>Proven ability to manage multiple and simultaneous projects and activities, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.</li><li>Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to build consensus with diverse groups of people.</li><li>Strong verbal and written communication skills, demonstrating exceptional writing skills for a variety of audiences.</li></ul>
