Chief of Staff/Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Initiatives

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Chief of Staff/Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Initiatives for the Student Affairs department. This position reports to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The Chief of Staff (COS)/Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Initiatives manages, facilitates, coordinates, and supports the implementation of the Vice Chancellor's vision and goals for the Division of Student Affairs. This position ensures that high priority projects and initiatives are effectively and efficiently managed.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Provides direct support to the Vice Chancellor, including oversight for projects, committees, meetings.
Serves as the direct contact between the Division of Student Affairs and Media Relations and manages the flow of information in and out of the Vice Chancellor's Office.
Follows up with student, staff, and community issues on behalf of the Vice Chancellor and reviews, evaluates, and responds to requests submitted to the Office of the Vice Chancellor.
Represents the Vice Chancellor in all manner of situations with tact and diplomacy and requires a dedication to consultation and consensus building.
Manages confidential and sensitive issues for the Vice Chancellor and develops solutions to a wide range of issues in all areas under the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs leadership.
Provides leadership for all communications and marketing activities in the Division of Student Affairs-New Brunswick.
Oversees and serves as the Division-wide expert related to all communications and marketing related activities, including but not limited to news releases, media relations, crisis communications, annual reports and publications, websites, newsletters, and conferences.
Serves as a member of the Vice Chancellor's Executive Leadership Team and maintains close and collaborative working relationships with Divisional Leadership.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Minimum of bachelor's degree in business or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Also requires 5 years of progressive responsibility.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent oral, written and other communications skills
The ability to multi-task and to travel.
Strong experience managing teams and/or employees of varying backgrounds and skills.
Familiarity with and able to implement the strategic use of new media to complement and enhance traditional communications channels.
The individual will exhibit qualities of emotional maturity, genuineness, self-confidence, judgement, fairness, creativity, discretion, decisiveness, diplomacy, tact, resiliency, adaptability, and tolerance for ambiguity.
Must observe confidentiality at all times regarding student information.
Must be a strategic thinker, proven problem-solver and must work well in highly collaborative environments.
Ability to address conflict and be able to address the media and large groups of constituents with ease.
10 or more years of progressive responsibility.
Prior experience developing and executing short- and long-term communications plans.
Experience using data to influence decisions and to report effectiveness is strongly desired.
Will regularly use Microsoft Office Applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Adobe Software, Access.
Other software used is Maxient conduct software, online social media sources such as Facebook and Twitter and YouTube.
The person will also need to be familiar with Baseline software used for assessment through Campus Labs.
Ability to work some weeknights and weekends as needed.
The individual is also expected to be on call during times of emergencies and crisis.
