This position will collaborate with the managing editor of opinion on a digital and print opinion content strategy that places a premium on highlighting local, unique, relevant and useful voices. The ideal candidate will help develop and build a network of voices to write about wide-ranging issues important to our readers within the city and beyond. In addition to the editing staff, this team includes some columnists and you will be expected to work with these writers to help them meet overall and individual goals and produce content that provokes, engages and explains. Using social media for promotion as well as story idea generation is imperative. You must be a quick study of digital storytelling tools and willing to experiment with new ways to share opinions online and in print. Writing ability also important.
Help handle a heavy editing and workflow schedule, including copy editing, line editing, print and digital production for daily pages and weekly Sunday section.
Contribute to a content strategy that is local, unique, relevant and useful and emphasizes strong connectedness to the audiences served and the issues they care about.
Work with the newsroom’s talented array of opinion writers and editors to maximize their audience and impact.
Encourage a wide range of voices and viewpoints on key issues facing the city, region and world those and other issues
Connect with and engage audiences on different platforms and with different story forms that go beyond traditional commentary.
Write occasional editorials and/or commentaries.
Seek opportunities to engage audiences with new approaches to delivering opinion, or via direct engagement via events.
A minimum of four years journalism experience
A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent professional experience
Strong writing and editing skills
Adept at using social media for discovery, research and distribution
Ability to use digital metrics to set goals, evaluate progress and inform adjustments
Exceptional collaboration and communication skills
Track record of effectively managing complex projects and/or stories
A solid grounding in SEO best practices
Skills in brainstorming, planning and coordinating multimedia storytelling
