POSITIONSUMMARY: The Director of Athletics/Student Athlete Development must be able to demonstrate, on a daily basis, the five (5) key values of the Delta College Athletic program: Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship and Leadership.
Promoting student success and degree completion through academics, building a strong foundation, and leading young men and women to be champions on and off the court are the essential responsibilities of this position.
The Director of Athletics/Student Athlete Development will provide leadership for athletic opportunities including intercollegiate and club programs while ensuring that Delta College athletes have appropriate equipment, facilities and coaching personnel.
Duties also include collaboration and work with the Student and Civic Engagement (SACE) staff as well as the Student and Educational Services (SES) Division regarding student engagement and success initiatives and programs, such as Orientation.
ESSENTIALDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIESINCLUDEBUTARENOTLIMITED TO THEFOLLOWING:
Provide leadership, direction, assessment and supervision of department personnel (athletic trainer, head coaches, associate coaches, and volunteer coaches, etc.)
Serve as liaison between the coaches, the student-athlete support system, administration and faculty
Orient the coaches and other staff of their duties and responsibilities, including professional development, staff meetings and departmental communications
Ensure that each coach and student-athlete has read and complies with each section of the Athletic Department Handbook
Establish guidance and oversee the planning and scheduling of athletic events, including notification to officials and visiting teams of the details for home contests
Serve as liaison to the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Michigan Community College Athletic Association. Clarify guidelines and materials with appropriate Delta College personnel
Maintain accurate and up to date records in the certification of eligibility process for each player in all sports
Establish procedures for the writing and release of athletic information to news media, to other institutions and to the community. Work with the Marketing Office to promote sports information
Ensure public relations training for the coaches and athletic staff. Maintain currency of the web Athletic pages
Complete, monitor and disseminate results of all federal government requirements, (i.e., determine eligibility; coordinate the athletic monitoring program, equity issues with regard to Title IX; the Title IX audit)
Provide oversight of the athletic budget, including recommending an annual budget to the Dean of Students and Vice President of SES. Maintain fiscal responsibility and govern budget cost centers
Monitor athletic insurance claims and ensure accurate completion of forms and other related documents
Systematically monitor athletic facilities and fields and make recommendations for safety improvements
Develop and implement program initiatives including camps, fundraising for all sports, and special athletic events such as the annual banquet
Assume responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of athletics equipment, maintain an inventory of the same, and order equipment and supplies as necessary
Provide leadership and guidance in the personal, academic and athletic development of student-athletes
Serve as a mentor to each athlete to promote the development of the expectations for the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, the Delta College Student Conduct Manual, and other institutional rules, expectations, policies and procedures
Monitor and give constant attention to a student-athlete’s grades and conduct including, eligibility status and promoting academic progress and degree completion of student-athletes
Provide direct oversight of the Champion of Leadership program including, Accountability and Responsibility Training, Student Athlete Advisory Committee and leadership development
Mentor Associate Head Coaches for ASPIRE to Succeed program, focusing on academic success as an important priority for all student-athletes
Work with the Student and Educational Services Division and with the Student and Civic Engagement staff on leadership and success initiatives, including development and implementation of programs and services
Work with other offices, such as Business Services, the Foundation Office, Public Safety, Fitness/Recreation Center to foster solid relationships to meet the needs of the Athletic program and student-athletes
Develop solid working relationships with faculty for the goal of academic student success
Assist in the College’s strategic planning and assessment process by developing annual departmental objectives that impact short and long-range priorities and goals
Other duties as assigned
Three years in athletic management or in coaching experience
CPR and First Aid certified
Demonstrated skill with written and oral communication, including the use of social media
Ability to attend all home games, oversee practices, and travel to out-of-town games
Demonstrated experience of Student Athlete Development
Athletic experience at the college or university level
Knowledge of the NJCAA and MCCAA Rules and Regulations
