Democracy Now! seeks a dynamic and experienced Broadcast Engineer to lead TV and radio broadcast operations for our live daily news hour.
Reporting to the General Manager, the Broadcast Engineer will provide technical support for fast-paced live in-studio and field productions; maintain broadcast, video production and supporting facility systems; design, update and build new systems as needed; manage studio and equipment inventory; and provide backup for production roles as needed. This position supervises contractors and manages relationships with vendors and affiliated stations.
A successful candidate will be well versed in video, audio and IT technologies, have great communication skills and enjoy working in a fast-paced daily news environment.

-Engineer in Charge for live daily 8am newscast, remote broadcasts and live to tape productions -Maintain and update critical broadcast systems including switcher, CG, video/audio router and processing, patching, intercom, audio board, lighting, cameras, teleprompter, video post production, captioning, sync, video playout and newsroom rundown -Manage fiber, satellite, ISDN and IP connectivity and transmission -Work with System Administrator to maintain IT broadcast systems including NAS video storage, audio/video encoding, streaming and network infrastructure -Maintain critical facility systems including HVAC, UPS and security -Work with management to identify need for, design and build new systems -Work closely with users to troubleshoot technical problems -Manage equipment inventory and supplies -Ensure adequate systems documentation and disaster recovery planning and preparation -Supervise contractors and act as technical liaison for TV and radio stations that carry Democracy Now! -Provide backup for various production roles -On call for breaking news and technical emergencies.
-3 to 5 years in a senior broadcast engineering position -Familiarity with and commitment to the mission of Democracy Now! preferred -Experience designing, installing and maintaining audio/video broadcast systems and equipment for a live television production -Understanding of and ability to troubleshoot IT systems including NAS storage and video encoding codecs and processes -Knowledge of Mac, Windows operating systems – Linux a plus -Experience with any of the following a plus: video switching, mixing audio, camera shading, operating teleprompter, lighting -Excellent communication and leadership skills -Demonstrated resourcefulness – a creative problem solver -Able to work independently and as part of a close knit team -Calm under pressure -Able to lift and rack 50 pounds and work on-call.
