The IU Center for Global Health is searching for a qualified communications expert who understands the importance of active, consistent and meaningful communication through a variety of channels and who will work towards enhancing IU's visibility and prestige as a local, national and international leader in global health. In addition to supporting the Center's broader communications strategies and goals, this position will play a key role in advancing the Center's reputation as one of the top 5 centers for global health research in the country.
PRIMARYROLE: The Communications Manager will manage and implement fast-paced projects and strategies for the IU Center for Global Health and its programs, including AMPATH-Kenya and the Center's Research Program. Must be an excellent writer who can succinctly and eloquently deliver high quality messaging which will help shape the narrative of the remarkable activities and achievements of the Center across the globe. They will be responsible for implementing a comprehensive and integrated communications effort designed to enhance the awareness of the Center, the AMPATH-Kenya program, and IU's global health research activities.
They will be responsible for supporting the communication and marketing objectives of the Center, including managing multiple websites, overseeing electronic and print communications, creating press releases, conceptualizing and developing graphic content/photography/design elements, and serving as an internal communications expert and coordinator for all social media. This position will work closely with the directors and staff of the IU Center for Global Health, the Director and Associate Director of Research for the Center, and the IU School of Medicine (IUSM), along with all other associated schools, units and departments across Indiana University.
Responsible for the implementation of many components of a targeted communications plan that spotlights the IUCGH's robust care, training and research activities. Create, manage and oversee communications to promote the programs of the IUCGH, utilizing multiple communications platforms. Responsible for various internal and external publications including writing and editing monthly e-newsletters, print newsletter, annual reports, brochures, press releases, news stories, etc. Generate editorial calendar, select and assign features and spotlights, write and edit copy, and research, interview and write news releases for the Center. Organize multiple tasks and priorities while acting as liaison between schools, units and departments to foster collaboration on various projects.
Develop overarching social media objectives and strategies. Implement, execute and manage content editorial calendars aligned with these strategies. Establish a social media presence and strategy for IUCGH. Generate and publish relevant, original, high-quality social media content. Promote content and track analytics to gain insight on traffic, demographics and effectiveness, utilizing this information to inform strategy. Work with international counterparts to document programs online and post interesting and timely content.
Enhance the brand recognition and digital presence of the IU Center for Global Health. Increase email communication from IUCGH and design and create a quarterly e-newsletter from IUCGH highlighting impact stories, faculty, events, global health programs, research/intern opportunities. Grow the IUCGH email list. Develop a strategy for media outreach in coordination with IU and the IUSM, including internal IU publications and local/national news media. Improve media relations and increase public awareness. Collaborate with the IU and IUSM media teams to pitch stories to local and national media. Work with international counterpart offices to increase local media coverage of initiatives.
Manage content on 3 websites, including the AMPATH-Kenya website, the IU Center for Global Health website, and the IU School of Medicine Global Health Expertise Hub website.
Manage video production. Work closely with contractors/partners to conceptualize, plan and film video productions for internal and external audiences. Write scripts for a wide range of video projects, coordinate filming schedules and conducts on-camera interviews.
Contribute to the planning and design of new initiatives and special projects. Research new areas for communications and marketing opportunities. Evaluate effectiveness of communications efforts.
Maintain and expand IUCGH and AMPATH databases.
REQUIRED: Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in marketing, public relations, journalism, English, communications or closely related field, plus 3 years experience in public relations, media relations, strategic communications and/or related field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ANDABILITIES:
Strong public relations and excellent verbal and communications skills.
Ability to process and articulate complex concepts, including those related to working internationally and the translation and dissemination of research outcomes.
Exceptionally good writing skills across media platforms including print, web and social.
Advanced computer skills, including command of Microsoft Office suite, as well as experience with photo and graphic design software.
Ability to update and manage databases and digital marketing software.
Superior project management skills.
Highly developed interpersonal communication skills and able to work with a wide range of constituents, including cross-culturally.
Positive attitude and a genuine enthusiasm.
Ability to problem solve and multi-task, with strong organizational and analytical skills.
Have a valid, current passport, and be able to travel internationally, nationally, or locally.
Ability to attend, speak and hear at large, small and individual meetings.
Experience using social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Instagram.
Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital and social media.
Experience with Adobe Design Suite, video editing software and marketing analytics platforms a plus.
Ability to create and strengthen a passion for the missions of the IU Center for Global Health and AMPATH-Kenya program.
Experience in writing/editing and international experience are highly desired.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
The position requires sitting for extended periods of time, moving up to 15 pound boxes on occasion, and ability to move around campus for meetings related to the position.
