Department/College Description University Photography Services team is a creative, fast-paced, and high-volume group under RITs Division of Marketing and Communications serving the marketing, branding, news, and archival photography needs of RIT.
Detailed Job Description The Assistant Director (AD) will report to the Director of University Web Services and manage the operations of University Photography Services including its studio. Supervise 2 or more full-time photographers, and several student photographers. He/she will provide coaching, and development opportunities for team photographers through creative direction, mentoring, and strategically assigning duties or projects. The AD will develop long-term team goals with measurements of success.
She/he will partner with cross-functional business partners, for example, marketers, designers, writers, web developers, social media managers, and other communications experts to determine visual potential and develop/coordinate photo shoots and photography campaigns and to forecast seasonal photography needs.
The AD will lead the creation of engaging, impactful, and brand-focused imagery for promotional and informational needs of the University. Deploy artistic vision, creativity, photographic skills, and knowledge of photography software to capture, edit, and deliver impactful images, using both natural and artificial lighting. Manage the photography needs for RIT's marketing campaigns, websites, print publications, news coverage, social media endeavors, student and faculty portfolios, and other uses as deemed appropriate by the supervisor.
He/she will manage the schedule of the studio and team photographers and assign work to leverage skill sets as appropriate, maximize capacity, increase operational efficiency, and ensure process compliance. Maintain a roster of talented freelance photographers and manage their scheduling as required. Lead continuous improvement of photography workflow.
The AD will manage the business aspects of the photography work, including billing, collecting model releases, maintaining camera and studio equipment, and recommending purchases. Assist in developing and managing overall photography operations budget. Maintain knowledge of current and upcoming industry trends in photography. Pursue continual skills enhancement on photography, media technology, and project management. Provide direction for cataloging process of images and maintenance of the primary photography catalog for the University including identification and enhancement of metadata.
Required Minimum Qualifications
4-5 years professional photography experience and 3-5 years managerial experience.
Ability to hire, train, mentor, and lead team of photographers
Proven track record of developing and refining processes as it relates to photography production
Successful track record of developing, executing, and measuring strategies and tactics
Artistic vision, abundant creativity, and strong design aesthetic
In-depth knowledge of professional photography equipment such as cameras, lenses, and lighting including ability to troubleshoot
Ability to use models, colors, shadows, shades, light, and distance to compose great photographs
Expertise in uses and effects of various types of lighting and methods
Proficient with photo editing software
Experience researching, procuring, and testing new photography hardware and software
Ability to evaluate artistic qualities of photographs
Ability to communicate effectively to achieve a certain composition in a photograph
Ability to receive and provide direction
Positive and energetic team player with ability to collaborate with stakeholders
Ability to thrive in fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-driven environments
Specialize in variety of photography including studio, large events, and staged on-location
Ability to move photography equipment regularly including cameras, lighting, lenses, and tripods
Ability to participate in occasional after hour photo shoots
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
