Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Edit/Media Specialist II Editor for the Student Affairs-Marketing department. This position reports to the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing for the Division of Student Affairs. The Edit/Media Specialist II Editor assists in the development, writing, production, and maintenance of a wide range of communications efforts that advance the mission of the Division of Student Affairs and its key programs and initiatives. The position produces assigned and self-initiated written and multimedia content for the division's website, newsletters, print and online publications, and other communications mediums as need arises. The Edit/Media Specialist II Editor must be able to convey intended messages accurately and succinctly both through editorial and visual mechanisms. The Edit/Media Specialist II Editor is familiar with website content management systems; social media platforms; online publishing strategies and best practices; basic video production, editing, and delivery techniques.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Writes and produces pitches, stories, social media posts, videos, and other compelling content for use on multiple platforms that advances the Division on-campus as well as to neighboring communities, peer institutions, national audiences, alumni, and donors.
Identifies key areas to publicize and how they relate to the Division's core values and strategic initiatives and is responsible for conceptualizing, researching and producing a full range of written, visual, audio, social and other content.
Produces photo and video content which supports written pieces or as stand-alone pieces.
Covers assigned areas and manages relevant issues in a timely manner and in innovative ways and coordinates with photography staff in the acquisition of project-specific photos.
Pitches news that expands the division's reach to a national audience and highlights unique stories about students and staff that advance the strategic priorities of the division.
Works with outside vendors, including designers, photographers, digital media specialists, printers, and mail houses, as assigned and works independently and with full-time and student web developers to publish content online through the division's website and social media channels.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree, preferably in English or communications related field; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Minimum 2 years' experience in journalism, public relations or communications, particularly in a web environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent organizational skills and trouble-shooting capabilities
Strong attention to detail
Experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of office administration, organization, archiving systems, and report writing
Ability to respond well to deadlines and multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Solid reporting background and strong communication and writing skills
Knowledge of multimedia production tools and multi-platform deliveries, such as still photography and graphics, blogging, podcasting, video and audio streaming, and experience integrating these elements into a visually appropriate website
Ability to work independently and set priorities that advance institutional mission and visibility and to work effectively with individuals at all levels of university governance and administration
Requires proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel
Experience in higher education
Knowledge of video production, including tripod and lighting setup, microphone/audio setup, video capture, editing, and exporting to various platforms
Knowledge of photography composition and capturing
Knowledge in use of DSLR cameras, lenses, and accessories
Experience with Adobe InDesign, Premiere
Mac operating system, Windows operating system, Microsoft Office
Adobe Creative Suite (especially Photoshop and Premiere)
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Light lifting and carrying of photographic/Video equipment (up to 25 pounds).
Time will be divided between working out of the office and on location around the New Brunswick campus for meetings, interviews, photo/video shoots.
Will require working occasional evenings and weekends in order to assist with and cover divisional events.
