The Associate Dean for Communications and Public Affairs leads a team of professionals in developing an integrated strategic communications plan that advances HLS' goals and objectives in a way that helps to broaden its impact and enhance its reach.
The Associate Dean for Communications and Public Affairs will perform the following essential functions:
Lead a team responsible for the development and execution of strategic communications programs encompassing media relations, digital communications, and publications, for internal HLS and Harvard audiences as well as external audiences.
Proactively advance HLS's positioning and relevance and expand its reach and impact with a variety of key audiences, including thought leaders in law and related fields.
Act as chief spokesperson for HLS on various issues and press coverage; communicate with both internal and external audiences, including news media and professional communities.
Spearhead media relations proactively to raise the visibility of HLS research programs, faculty initiatives, clinical programming, and other school-wide initiatives. Lead school response to complicated issues, including breaking news, campus events, and media inquiries. Work very closely with the Dean and Dean's Office on media messaging.
Take a proactive approach to media relations and social media efforts to ensure that HLS messages and stories reach key target audiences with impact.
Drive the development of a compelling and effective digital presence resulting in vibrant and responsive online communications that support key program objectives and initiatives.
Employ appropriate metrics and analytics to ensure efficacy of all online and other communications programs.
Provide strategic counsel to the Dean, faculty, administration, students, alumni and others, as appropriate.
Provide leadership, effective supervision, and personnel management to the communications team.
Maintain and revise relevant communications and media policies to ensure that privacy regulations and HLS-wide practices are understood and effectively implemented.
Build effective relationships with all members of the HLS community and provide guidance on a wide range of publication needs in both print and electronic media.
Lead a team charged with developing recommendations to strengthen collaborative relationships, improving cross-unit communication processes, and ensuring consistency of messaging across key areas within the HLS community.

Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in marketing, journalism, communications, public relations, or a related field.
Advanced degree preferred. Innovative strategic communications leader with a successful track record of progressive experience in directing an organization's public relations or marketing communications efforts, including digital media. Successful track record as a leader, manager, and strategist. Must be able to lead and drive change in a large, decentralized and complex mission-driven organization. Must have the proven ability to effectively advise senior leaders and faculty and both understand and navigate the higher education environment. Experience with responding to and managing communications crises. Proven effectiveness in employing digital marketing and social media; able to develop communications plans that fully leverage new technologies. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Skilled in leading, motivating and developing a diverse team of strategic communications professionals. Confident decision-maker; self-starter with high energy/drive. Superior interpersonal and organizational skills are needed, along with a demonstrated ability to think strategically and critically. Must be able to consistently exercise sound judgment and possess strong skills in the areas of leadership, persuasion, negotiation, and people and fiscal management.
