The Wisconsin Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UW-La Crosse, a part of the College of Business Administration (CBA), is seeking an Outreach Specialist (Business Consultant & Outreach Specialist). This position is responsible for developing, promoting and providing business counseling services and supporting the planning, development, promotion and management of SBDC business education outreach. This includes business counseling and outreach in a seven county service area of west-central Wisconsin.
Responsibilities include: (i) identification of client needs, development and implementation of counseling services in support of regional businesses and entrepreneurial initiatives; (ii) serving as a lead counselor of business and financial planning and management support of regional businesses, (iii) supporting and training in region for business related educational programs; and (iv) management of budgets, compliance with program requirements and supervision of staff in support of program requirements and outreach administration.
This position will develop and maintain an active working relationship with UW faculty and staff as well as professional business organizations in the community and the state. Key partners include the Small Business Administration (SBA), SBA partners such as SCORE, Women, Minority and Veteran Outreach and Business Centers, Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, 7 Rivers Alliance, funding organizations and other local, state and federal economic development groups including Chambers of Commerce and economic development organizations.
Knowledge/Skills and Abilities
Experience in preparing detailed financial statements, financial projections and business plans;
Familiarity with a broad range of entrepreneurship and business management related topics, including lean startup/business model canvas, marketing/brand development, legal and financial considerations in a business setting, funding sources, etc.
Experience counseling small businesses in financial and business related matters;
Familiarity with online data and resources to support client consulting and business planning activities;
Familiarity with adult education in business setting;
Ability to successfully access internet, interact with clients and others electronically, identify and use online resources/databases;
Familiarity with technology related marketing/internet/social media;
Ability to understand, promote, oversee and conduct training and other event activities, including handling logistic activities and reconciliation of training and other event activities with related budgets;
Strong work ethic, demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently and in teams; and
Excellent written/oral communication skills.
Master’s degree with a preferred major in Business or a related field;
Demonstrated experience consulting with diverse small businesses (e.g., diverse client backgrounds and industries) in financial and business related matters;
Three years financial and/or loan experience;
Experience working with business planning software and tools, such as LivePlan;
Experience as a small business owner or manager;
Experience in business outreach, program planning and implementation of adult education in business setting, including ability to instruct/train others on topics related to SBDC training programs (e.g., ETP, business basics, specialty and customized training, etc.);
Ability to manage budgets/financial matters/grants;
Ability to establish and maintain networks of business and referral resources;
Successful work with diverse populations; and
Business consultant related certification or specialized knowledge of relevant topics relating to entrepreneurship and accounting/financial planning/business management.
This position is anticipated to be an annual 100% appointment, contingent on program needs and funding.
