Farmingdale State College invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in Graphic Design at the Assistant Professor level. Successful candidate will join the Visual Communications Department, which encourages a culture in which students learn the value of collaboration, vision, risk-taking, discovery, entrepreneurship, passion, social responsibility and creativity.
All faculty members at Farmingdale State College have three workload components: teaching, research and scholarly activity, and service. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest and high level of competence in teaching. Candidates should have a research agenda that complements their area of academic specialty resulting in peer-reviewed publications and presentation, both of which are necessary for promotion and tenure at Farmingdale State College. The service component of the workload includes student advisement as well as active participation on departmental, school and college-wide committees. The faculty member may be expected to teach in multiple formats including hybrid, online and traditional face-to-face classes.
A terminal degree (MFA, MDes, DDes, or Ph.D.) in Graphic Design, or equivalent terminal degree in a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution or university with an award date by August 31, 2019.
Knowledge and ability to teach at the advanced level in at least two of the following areas: print design, web design, typography, digital imaging, is essential.
Excellent communication skills, collegial personality and a willingness to become actively involved in the functioning of the department including academic advisement, curriculum development, assessment and recruitment are essential.
Ongoing creative and/or research activities that are pertinent to the field of graphic design and visual communications, and keeping current with graphic hardware and software are required.
One or more years of practice-based Mac design studio experience and at least 1 year of college/university level teaching experience.
An ongoing record of professional consulting and/or peer reviewed scholarship (publications and/or creative activities).
A commitment to teaching undergraduates of diverse backgrounds.
Candidates should have strong experience in advanced graphic design and typography, as well as the to teach in one or more of the following areas: web design, interactive media, design methodology, and technologies for various platforms including print, web, social media, mobile devices. Areas of specialty may include integrated campaigns, web technologies, social impact design, branded content, and motion/animation capabilities.
This is a full-time, 10 month faculty position.
For the first 10 working days, beginning Tuesday, September 25, 2018 and ending Monday, October 8, 2018, applications will be limited to UUP Farmingdale.
