The Director of Communications directs the collegeâ™s communications unit and staff. The Director assists the college leadership team in planning and implementing communications and public relations supporting the College of Architecture. The communications unitâ™s role is to assist in promoting and enhancing the public image and identity of the College of Architecture and its education, research, and service mission. The Director manages the communications staff in developing, writing, editing, publishing, producing and disseminating publicity materials, and collateral supporting the college, including print and social media.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelorâ™s degree in a Communication or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ten years of experience in a communications related field that includes at least two years of experience in management or leadership in communications.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Masterâ™s degree in a related field.
Ten years of experience in a communications related field that includes at least five years of experience in management or leadership in communications.
Proven leadership and managerial experience directing creative staff including writers, designers, photographers, and videographers.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Expertise in one or more of the communications disciplines.
Knowledge of university communications protocols, policies and procedures.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skill.
Familiar with creative suite and general office software.
Leads college communications staff. Works with the college leadership to formulate, implement, and plan college communications procedures. Develops ideas. Researches and collects promotional and support information for college programs, special projects and events, research initiatives, and faculty and student activities.
Oversees the planning, writing, editing, photographing, designing, development, production, and dissemination of press releases, scripts, factsheets, presentations, reports, flyers, brochures, posters, print and electronic newsletters, magazines, multimedia presentations, podcasts, videos, and other communication collateral promoting and supporting the college.
Advises college leadership on communication-related opportunities or problems and recommends course of action. Assigns, oversees, and consults on tasks undertaken by communications support staff. Attends relevant college meetings. Represents colleges in designated official capacities within college and larger university contexts.
Assists the College with communication-related initiatives. Arranges news coverage, photography, etc.
Coordinates the communications team in research, copy-editing, proofreading, and otherwise assisting in the production of college print and electronic media for distribution.
Tracks, verifies, reviews, and approves all expenditures related to programs and initiatives in the communication office and documents / files related paperwork with College business office and related departments.
Coordinates college public relations and community outreach activities. Assists staff in coordination of special events. Nurtures media relationships and assists in collegeâ™s public relations efforts.
Fields media queries and facilitate media visits. Assists faculty and staff with media interviews and media training. Hires, work with, and otherwise facilitates third-party consultants, writers, photographers, videographers, etc. in the production of communications related projects and initiatives.Performs other duties as assigned.
