Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications seeks to hire a full-time faculty member with expertise in investigative journalism. The appointment may have the rank of Assistant, Associate or full Professor. This position provides the chance to work with an exceptional group of students and accomplished faculty in creating new avenues to report and present high impact investigative stories across multiple platforms. Medill is a top-ranked school with a longstanding reputation for excellence in journalism education. It is a highly regarded academic unit at Northwestern University, a research 1 institution located in the Chicago media market with an additional campus in Qatar and academic programs in San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
Candidates who are journalists will be expected to have a track record for leading outstanding and award-winning investigative journalism projects (in any medium). No advanced degree is required for candidates who have distinguished themselves through the quality of their journalism and demonstrated capacity for innovation and thought leadership. Preferred candidates will have significant substantive experience producing influential journalism.
Academic candidates will be expected to conduct and publish field-shaping research and also engage in thought leadership investigative journalism and media. Medill is a professional school, and thus the successful candidate will be able to integrate theory and professional practice, making research actionable for professionals. Academic candidates should have a doctorate in a relevant field, a record of significant research in the core areas, the capacity for thought leadership and a strong teaching record.
Candidates will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, to continue producing first-rate journalism or research, and to perform professional service within the school, university, and community. Candidates will also be expected to lead students in the creation of nationally-recognized investigative journalism projects, including the Medill Justice Project. Interdisciplinary background will be considered an important added value.
