The Office of University Communications at the University of Virginia seeks an experienced editor with exceptional storytelling skills, sharp news judgment, and demonstrated ability to lead a team of communicators to find and tell compelling stories that elevate the reputation of one of the nation's premier public universities.
The Managing Editor's primary responsibility is leading a team of news associates and a chief copy editor who produce and edit news and feature content that is principally published on UVA Today, news.virginia.edu. This content is distributed through a daily email newsletter, social media, virginia.edu, other University-affiliated websites, in print publications, and in marketing or advertising campaigns produced by the Office of University Communications.
UVA Today serves as the University's official news site, and includes digital content including written narratives, compelling photographs and videos, information graphics and digital interactive features produced to inform broad audiences and positively influence the way members of those audiences think about and interact with the University of Virginia.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Communications and Executive Editor of UVA Today, the Managing Editor is responsible for the quality, quantity and strategic value of content generated by the UVA Today team, which is a function of University News.
A Bachelor's degree, combined with journalism or communications management background, including at least five years in a daily publication, website or other setting that requires oversight of content planning and development is required.
The incumbent has demonstrated experience developing and executing content plans; proven ability editing copy for accuracy, context, compelling narratives, AP Style and easy-to-consume organization; and experience managing others and producing content on deadline. A management style that values respect, encouragement, coaching and collegial relationships both with direct reports and with colleagues across the organization is vital. The ability to balance the urgency of a daily news environment with the need to plan for longer-term strategic content needs is critical. A passion for storytelling, excitement for news, and a commitment to the principles of higher education's role in the service of democracy is a must.

Demonstrated ability to coordinate community relations and outreach initiatives. Demonstrated experience building, leading, motivating, and assessing small professional teams. Ability to oversee preparation, production, and distribution of information and marketing materials. Ability to advise teams on the implementation and modification of communications plans. Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret information for senior University leaders in areas of expertise. Exemplify the University's educational mission, strategic aims, and programs.
