Responsible for: The Communications Specialist will promote EnergyUnited’s positive internal and external image through written and multimedia communications. The Communications Specialist will enterprise stories for member and customer newsletters, write and edit copy and assist in the development of advertising and marketing materials, help to direct the graphic and visual imagery supporting main messages, ensure timely distribution of publications, and ensure consistency and clarity in EnergyUnited’s brand and messaging.
Key Accountabilities & Duties, Objectives and Responsibilities:
Manage and assist in coordination of monthly planning sheet content for the cooperative’s employee and member newsletters.
Responsible for the design and layout of the monthly employee and member slideshows using InDesign.
Coordinate and manage all activities related to the Youth Tour, Sports Camp and Bright Ideas programs.
Assist with the support of several community outreach activities and events, including, but not limited to, MAC meetings, the Annual Meeting, BOD Election, Bright Ideas Luncheons, Student Scholarship Program and other special events or activities.
Manage work assignments based on the cooperative’s current needs, experience of the specialist and specialist's particular strengths in advertising or communications.
Possess the skill to recognize and develop stories that positively leverage the cooperative.
Develop and coordinate letters, brochures, postcards, bill inserts and other marketing/promotional materials.
Strong ability to write proficient, clear and precise prose; edits work for spelling and grammar; varies writing style to meet needs; able to read and interpret written information. Have some familiarity with AP Style.
Basic photography and videography skills.
Attend conferences and training as requested by the Manager, Communications.
Observes all safety rules and regulations adopted by the Cooperative.
Observes all work rules adopted by the Cooperative.
Will work with various departments and individuals to assist with communications efforts and develop communication strategies.
Will evaluate and help to develop new communications, processes initiatives and solutions.
Backup the Digital Communications Specialist as needed.
Direct Reports: None
Internal Relationships: Shall develop and maintain internal relationships necessary to achieve purpose of position and desired results.
External Contacts: Must maintain relationship with vendors and partner agencies, members of the media, and some members/customers to ensure that communication issues are identified and resolved. Shall maintain necessary job related external contacts to assure satisfactory results.
Authority: The Communications Specialist is authorized to take any actions necessary to carry out the responsibilities delegated to him/her so long as such action does not deviate from established corporate policies and is conducted with sound business judgment. The exceptions to this authority are limited by the discretion by the Manager, Communications.
EDUCATION – Bachelor’s Degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or related field.
EXPERIENCE – A minimum of 3+ year’s communications, public relations or marketing experience.
KNOWLEDGE – Skilled writer with good news judgment and the ability to effectively develop stories and new angles that positively leverage the organization. Knowledge of communications and social media practices that lead to effective communication strategies that inform the cooperative’s internal and external constituents. Proficiency in Microsoft Office:(PowerPoint, Excel, Word) and Adobe Suite: (InDesign, Photoshop, and/or Illustrator,).
ATTITUDE – Must have a positive, open mind and considerate attitude toward the responsibilities of the position. Must be a self-starter. Must have an attitude of neatness, timeliness, orderliness and accuracy toward the job. Must possess a very conscientious attitude toward record keeping.
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS – Must be of high moral integrity, pleasing personality and possess good personal habits. Must be able to retain information of a confidential nature. Must be able to project a good public image. Must be able to function cooperatively with peers as a team member to meet departmental and system objectives. Must be able to function with minimal supervision.
ABILITIES AND SKILLS – Must have ability to implement work plans, make sound decisions from observations and carry out instructions. Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines; as well as, work in harmony with many different personality types. Must be able to work with very little supervision and be proactive in responsibilities. Must possess a strong ability to communicate in both verbal and written form.
WORKING CONDITIONS – Normal working conditions and hours of 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Some irregular working hours and nights will be required, which includes working when we are experiencing wintry weather conditions and winter storms and/or when we have a large amount of power outages. The duties of this position are primarily performed in an office environment with travel required as necessary to the position.
WORK REQUIREMENTS: Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license. All employees assigned to headquarters or non-direct operational positions must make their domicile within one of the nineteen counties served by the Cooperative.
