Strategic Communications Specialist - Center on Education and the Workforce (CEW), McCourt School of Public Policy
The Center on Education and the Workforce (CEW) is an independent research center associated with the McCourt School of Public Policy that studies the link between education, career qualifications, and workforce demands. CEW provides research to postsecondary and workforce administrators, policymakers and leaders across the nation. Additionally, using data-based research, CEW's founder and director works closely with the President's Office to help articulate university positions and support the President and senior university leaders. CEW publishes between 8-10 publications every year which require extensive planning, coordination and collaboration. CEW is organized into three units: research, communications, and editorial. The communications team reports directly to the Operations Director and is responsible for strategic communications planning and the release of our publications. Among other requests, the communications team handles an average of 500 media requests per year.
CEW seeks a Strategic Communications Specialist to apply writing and editing expertise to enhance CEW's communications efforts via its online and print publications. The Strategic Communications Specialist will have substantial involvement in the production of CEW's reports (8-10 per year) by serving as the backbone in the writing and editing of CEW's communications efforts. The position must independently manage writing and editing projects including blogs and other promotional materials such as: online newsletters, tool-kits, media alerts, press coverage reports, fact sheets, online content, social media and other documents. The position is required to work flexible hours, and respond in a timely and professional manner to inquiries from internal and external constituents, including the news media. The position requires a positive and flexible attitude, strong oral and written communications skills, careful judgment, flexibility, efficiency, and the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines for a wide variety of assignments. Duties include but are not limited to:
Functions as a critical member of the communications team, supporting all efforts and is frequently tapped to back-up the Senior Communications Manager and the Social Media Specialist.
Responsible for assisting with media relations efforts and expanding upon existing strategy.
Checks accuracy with subject matter experts and finalize written documents in accordance with organization's established writing style, formats, fonts, etc.
Supervises student interns, compiles and distributes daily news clips for center use and creates regular reports of communications efforts.
Writes and drafts the center e-newsletter, coordinating with the Multimedia Specialist to update and maintain the center's website.
Generates and fies media lists, coordinates logistics for media interviews and performs daily administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments and meetings, answering the phone and responding to e-mail inquiries.
Bachelor's degree and degree in English, communications, public policy, political science or related field
Experience with media relations and writing preferred
Must have strong organizational skills and ability to summarize data and prioritize work
This candidate must possess a strong work ethic, exhibit excellent time-management skills, be highly detail-oriented and a self-starter
The ideal candidate will also have strong communication, organizational skills, an ability to think critically and summarize data
