The Media RelationsSpecialist is part of the Strategic Communications office at VanderbiltUniversity and is responsible for developing and implementing media relationsplans and tactics to enhance Vanderbilt University's reputation, and to advancethe university's mission as a premier academic research institution. Thisposition will handle proactive and reactive media relations for Vanderbilt,including monitoring news developments, developing messaging, and buildingproductive relationships with local, national, and international news media.Reporting to the Media Relations Manager, the Media Relations Specialist willinteract with faculty, staff, students, and internal/external stakeholders.
The Office of StrategicCommunications designs and executes integrated communications strategies toprotect and enhance Vanderbilt's local, national and international reputation,and positions the university as one of the world's leading academic research institutionsacross a variety of digital and traditional channels.
Key Functions andExpected Performance:
§ Develops and executesmedia relations plans and tactics that reflect and support the university'soverall communications goals.
§ Develops and maintainsrelationships with local, regional, national, and international media outlets.
§ Pitches stories to newsmedia, prioritizing national, high priority and international media outlets.Coordinates news interviews.
§ Writes and edits newsreleases, rapid response statements, media advisories, messaging, talkingpoints, fact sheets, op-eds, and other media relations materials.
§ Follows industry-relatednews and generates ideas around trending topics.
§ Facilitates mediarelations at key events.
§ Monitors, measures andreports out on media coverage; stays current on news developments.
§ Maintains media lists.
§ Works closely withpartners across the Division of Communications to coordinate communicationsefforts and ensure consistent cross-channel messaging.
§ Performs other duties asassigned.
The position does notsupervise others and reports administratively and functionally to the MediaRelations Manager.
§ A Bachelor's degree froman accredited institution of higher education is necessary.
§ A Master's degree froman accredited institution of higher education is preferred.
Experience and Skills:
§ At least 3 years ofexperience in communications, journalism or related field, and a track recordof success in media relations is necessary.
§ An ability todemonstrate excellent news judgment, excellent written communications skillsand an excellent sense of what is appropriate for the brand ispreferred.
§ Proven experience inmedia relations and a full understanding of how to navigate social media toolsand audiences is preferred.
§ Demonstratedunderstanding of the evolving media landscape is preferred.
§ An ability todemonstrate and communicate about the role media relations plays in the broadercommunications plan for a department, school, university or brand ispreferred.
§ Demonstratedunderstanding of the university's mission, values, goals and priorities and anability to ensure that all are considered in developing communicationsstrategies is preferred.
§ Self-starter withability to independently execute communications priorities is preferred.
§ An ability tocollaborate with Division of Communications colleagues and communicatecomfortably with various internal audiences outside of the Division ofCommunications such as faculty and staff is necessary.
§ Experience and comfortworking in a deadline-driven environment of multiple projects and quickturn-around requirements is necessary.
§ Utmost adherence toconfidentiality and business ethics; demonstrated outstanding judgment anddiscretion is necessary.
§ Willingness to workirregular hours, as needed, is necessary.
