Provides a broad range of communication support for the School of Social Work (SSW) documenting students, faculty, alumni and staff achievements by writing news stories and news releases, and editing and designing newsletters, annual magazine and other publications such as fliers, brochures, pamphlets and information booklets. Writes and develops print content directly supporting student recruitment, retention and graduation, institutional advancement, community outreach, alumni initiatives, reputation management, marketing, admissions, special events and other functions.
Responsible for writing news stories, news releases and feature stories about student, faculty, alumni and staff achievements, research, activities, events and other initiatives. Develops ideas, writes and edits news and feature stories following Associated Press Stylebook writing guidelines and industry journalistic reporting standards. Serves as the project lead and deputy editor for the SSW's annual magazine, bi-monthly e-newsletter, and the annual research and doctoral publications. Develops, creates, designs and publishes e-newsletters, fliers, brochures, pamphlets, advertising placements, hard copy annual report publication/magazine and other publications for the School. Ensures SSW publications are designed, published and distributed on time. Serves as the project and primary lead in developing written descriptive content for the SSW's website and monitoring webpages for content to update. Writes clear and concise content for the SSW’s webpages. Ensures content on SSW’s website is free from grammatical errors and incorrect information. Regularly monitors and provides written and imagery content updates to SSW webpages. Writes content for and assists in developing and, in many cases, taking the initiative and lead creating marketing and advertising materials for SSW academic programs, recruiters, research centers, field, professional development, and other offices. Supports all marketing and communication efforts and helps with SSW reputation and brand management. Writes speeches, talking-points and other remarks for the Dean, Senior Associate Dean, Associate Dean for Research and other SSW leaders. Works with SSW leadership, University Institutional Advancement, University Communications, alumni and others to improve SSW’s community outreach, engagement and reputation. Assists department manager in media training of faculty, staff and students and in identifying and working with University Communications to connect faculty for interviews to various media outlets, journalists, professional publications and social work related blog sites. Monitors media and news coverage of SSW and social work related issues; provides regular reports and updates to supervisor. Co-manages and works with the SSW's digital multimedia production communication assistant in posting to social media and creating engaging content for the social media platforms and the SSW's website, including taking and posting photos, taking and editing videos, and other multimedia activities and functions. Works with SSW recruiting and admissions personnel to cover recruiting events and speak with prospective students when admissions counselors are not available. Supports and assists admissions counselors in developing dynamic presentations. Travels to conferences and other events to represent SSW and to write news and feature stories, take photos and create videos. Assists in developing and working collaboratively with an integrated communication, marketing and recruiting team in executing the annual communication-recruiting plan for the SSW's recruiting, admissions, research, academic programs, research centers, community outreach, alumni and other initiatives. Works collaboratively with SSW Web Developer, Communications Assistant, Supervisor, Department Heads/Directors, admissions counselors and and the Special Events and Marketing Coordinator.
Bachelor’s degree in print journalism, digital journalism, communication, public relations or related field or equivalent experience. Two (2) or more years of experience in public relations, communication, writing/editing or related field. Excellent news and feature writing skills and demonstrated proficiency to expert level competence in AP journalism style writing and copy editing. Demonstrated experience using desktop publishing, e-newsletter and magazine publishing, video editing and other graphics publication software. Experience effectively managing and marketing content on a website, blog and a variety of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube). Independent decision making and problem solving ability will be expected in areas such as writing, editing and designing content for website and publications. Demonstrated experience can be before and after awarding of bachelor's degree.
Experience using email-marketing software, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro and audio/visual editing equipment and software is a plus. A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others to effectively complete communication and marketing projects on time. Experience as an editor, co-editor, publisher and writer for a publication, journal or periodical. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. In addition, experience in a higher education environment and interpreting complex academic research to write engaging news and feature stories is a plus.
