The South Florida Sun Sentinel has an exciting opportunity for an Interactive News Designer/Data Visualization Journalist to join our team.
In this role, you will conceive, develop and design interactive projects of varying scales — from data visualizations and maps to web apps and pages. We cover the three largest counties in Florida and you’ll work with a team of ambitious and aggressive reporters, editors and visual journalists on a wide spectrum of subjects, from news to politics to sports and entertainment.

Have knowledge of modern web design principles and using them to create compelling narratives
Be passionate about the world of digital journalism and in tune with trends and technology.
Be quick on deadline.
Work well with reporters and editors and at the same time be able to develop your own ideas for content and projects.
Thrive working on audience-focused content.
Be able to balance short-term and long-term projects.
Have strong news judgment and some writing experience.
While you’ll be working on a team in our newsroom and at our sister newsroom, Orlando Sentinel, you should be self-motivating and a problem solver.
Experience working with version control tools such as Git and sharing a codebase with a team.
Experience working with Amazon AWS (We mostly use S3, EC2, Lambda).
Up-to-date knowledge on web technologies, modern web standards and how to apply them to news applications.
Understanding of developer APIs.
IF YOU HAVE THESE, YOU’LL HAVE AN EDGE:
Familiarity with a backend language such as Python or Ruby (We work in mostly in Python, using frameworks such as Django and Flask).
Familiarity with building newsroom tools that speed up the data visualization process, including writing code that can be turned into templates for future use.
Ability to incorporate analytics into web projects to measure audience engagement.
