PA Media Group is looking for a dynamic Opinion Editor to lead vital, constructive community conversations on PennLive.com and in The Patriot-News newspaper.
The Opinion Editor sets the company's editorial positions on local, state and national issues with work that fosters social engagement. They are responsible for several major initiatives in advocacy journalism each year, which recently included the fight against Pennsylvania's opioids epidemic.
He or she will lead a diverse and committed editorial board, recruit and manage freelance columnists, develop op-ed pieces from regional stakeholders and moderate our reader panel discussions. Specific responsibilities include three editorials a week in print, digital and video formats, and a weekday online newsletter.
The ideal Opinion Editor will be a passionate, fearless voice for the central PA community on one of the largest digital news sites in the state. They will meet regularly with civic leaders and readers, and represent the company at public events, including debates, and on TV and radio.
We are looking for a strong idea person who will make this position truly digital. They should be skilled in social media, adept at publishing video pieces from their phone, and have a good understanding of online analytics.
They must be a compelling and precise writer, able to add depth and human interest to the big issues of the day.
And they should enjoy having fun. After all, this is the opinion desk that recently published a "retraction" for panning Lincoln's Gettysburg Address back in 1863!
