The Marketing & Communications group within the School of Computer Science at CMU is looking for an Associate Director of Media Relations. This is an exciting, dynamic, and highly visible role for you if you are as passionate as we are about technology and supporting one of the world's best-in-class institutions for computer science research and education. In this role, you will be an integral member of SCS Marketing & Communications team. You will report to the Director of Marketing & Communications and work closely with the Director of Media Relations, faculty, researchers, students and staff throughout all academic units, labs, institutes and centers in SCS.
Your primary responsibilities include:
Acting as campus media relations/public relations contact with the media and other public and internal outlets. Maintaining and developing contacts with local and national media contacts and internal partners and other educational organizations to improve the effectiveness of communications or public responses to significant issues
Building communication plans that produce results in various types of media. Reviewing impact and sharing success of efforts with key partners
Offering counsel and mentorship to management for taking care of the media, public and internal communications. Coordinating or partnering with central staff management (Marketing and Media Relations) as needed to support overall communication needs of college or campus
Leading the development and providing editorial approval on press releases and related college, campus or division communications. May be involved in writing (papers and proposals) and editing
Handling the work of vendors, designers, photographers, video producers and others to plan and produce promotional publications, videos and other materials
Compiling daily lists of articles of interest and develop distribution system to share them, primarily with school leadership (dean, associate deans, assistant deans, department heads) and with SCS departments
Skills and Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required
5 or more years of experience required
Strong science/technology writing talent is required as well as familiarity with AP style. Ability to grasp technical concepts and communicate effectively to broader, non-technical audiences is important. Feature writing and copyediting abilities also are necessary. Writing test and pitch samples may be required
Demonstrated ability to connect with and interview faculty/researchers to develop media pitches for dedicated and ongoing media relations and news story placements, strong media contacts, and a consistent record of pitching/placing stories in national and leading business, tech and education media is necessary
Ability to adapt writing for differing audiences (media, alums, donors and prospective donors, corporate and government partners) and internal and external channels; ability and willingness to work in partnership with other colleges and with the university's central marketing & communications organization is essential
Familiarity with social media channels and web strategy + content development is necessary
Ability to track, measure and report on media relations activities and successful placements is required
