The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Communications will envision, develop and lead a sophisticated, proactive and comprehensive strategy for successfully communicating the goals and priorities of the University while increasing the national and global reputation of the University of Pittsburgh. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications and Marketing, the AVC will lead and manage the teams responsible for news content, media relations, and issues management, and will be responsible for execution, quality and metrics across the University's traditional and digital news channels and platforms.
As a thought-partner and acting as a counselor to senior leaders in the Office of University Communications, and across the institution, this role also serves to provide strategic, tactical and operational support for internal clients, resulting in enhanced recognition and amplification of the contributions of the talented and diverse faculty, staff, students and alumni. This leader will also have a significant role in fostering a productive and supportive work environment that strengthens administrative and operational efficiency. Leadership and Management:
Serve as a senior news strategist for the University, including spokesperson responsibilities as needed.
Lead and manage the University's news team, comprised of news content writers and publishers, media relations staff, and social media and web managers. Develop and implement rapid responses to manage issues and crises. Serve as an advisor to University leadership on matters requiring crisis communications.
Provide strategic, tactical and operational support for internal clients, resulting in enhanced recognition and amplification.
Work with Vice Chancellor and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Marketing to implement strategic communications and integrate workflows across print, web and social media.
Direct process and systems improvements that strengthen administrative and operational efficiency.
Strategy and Planning:
Serve as a strategic partner and advisor to the vice chancellor and university senior level administrators.
Work with vice chancellor and university senior leaders to develop strategic communications plans and the development of short- and long-term communications goals.
Design and implement proactive and strategic media relations and storytelling approaches.
Oversee evaluation of news products; identify and implement opportunities to shift resources to improve effectiveness.
Serve as an advisor to university leadership on matters requiring crisis communications.
Develop and implement sophisticated tracking of readership and reach analytics, compile and present findings and recommendations for improvement.
Qualified candidates will possess:
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English or other Liberal Arts field.
15+ years of experience leading a team of communicators.
Demonstrated ability to inspire and lead teams with varied backgrounds and skills.
Significant, progressive experience in supervision in complex environments with multiple constituencies.
Successful track record in sensitive and complex project management.
Exceptional professionalism, communication, and organizational skills and demonstrate the ability to act as a thought-partner to vice chancellor and senior leadership team.
Demonstrated success in newsroom or campaign-style environment is strongly preferred.
Minimum Experience Level Required: 15+ years experience
