The Brown University Division of Advancement seeks qualified applicants for the position of Research Analyst.
The Research Analyst produces highly customized and professionally written research reports based upon synthesizing and evaluating information gleaned from in-depth research and financial analysis. Using proprietary financial forecasting and inclination models, the Research Analyst assesses and rates the ability and propensity of individuals, corporations and foundations to make philanthropic contributions to and serve in volunteer capacities for Brown University. Additionally, the Research Analyst is responsible for the proactive assessment, coding and ongoing tracking of all major and principal gift prospects for the Development Office, providing high-level background research, demographic analysis, trending and financial forecasting.
The position employs advanced research data collection methods utilizing a wide range of sources, including complex web queries, vendor subscriptions (Blackbaud, EverTrue, WealthEngine, Capital IQ, etc), social media data, alert services, archival libraries and print publications, internal databases and records, financial documents, market surveys, etc. In this capacity, the analyst works collaboratively with and as liaisons to senior Development unit managers and major and principal gifts fundraisers to help meet overall fundraising goals, particularly those focused on identifying potential prospects, evaluating relationships and engagement opportunities and developing appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies for alumni, parents and friends that maximize their giving to and engagement with the University.
Activities of the Research Analysts are focused on the Universityâ™s highest level prospective donors capable of making major gifts of $100,000 and above, with specialized and increased attention on principal gift prospects that have the capacity to give $5 million or more.
Bachelorâ™s degree and 3 years of advancement research, development, fundraising, and/or market research experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, with demonstrated competencies in applied marketing research, sales, marketing and/or financial analysis, library science, journalism, business communications and/or similar fields considered.
Preference given to candidates with understanding of and competency with the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) Basic and Advanced Skill Sets.
Preference will be given to individuals with experience working in the nonprofit sector, and/or an academic or research institution, and who have been involved in fundraising or development.
Proven library, research and analytical techniques, emphasizing the ability to gather, evaluate and synthesize complex and data from various sources and present information in a clear and cohesive manner.
Must demonstrate superior writing skills, with an expeditious approach and the ability to condense and clarify information in written form.
High level of computer proficiency required. Must have advanced working knowledge of the Window environment (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) as well as expert knowledge, mastery and fluency with building Internet and web queries, manipulating and retrieving data from complex database sources, managing news alerts technologies, and using electronic subscription services.
Ability to work independently and proactively, yet function in a collaborative team environment, exhibiting self-reliance, dependability, trustworthiness, good listening skills, and an ability to form effective working partnerships with colleagues.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, competing priorities, to solve problems and to meet challenging and changing deadlines.
Superior interpersonal skills with proven ability to successfully interact and collaborate with varied constituencies in a professional manner, exhibiting excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrating tact and diplomacy working with a wide variety of personalities.
High degree of professionalism, ethical sensitivity, confidentiality and discretion; proven ability to apply good judgment and responsible decision-making.
The grade and title of the incumbent will be determined by years of experience. Incumbents with three years of experience will be Research Analyst, job grade 9; incumbents with 4 or more years of experience will be Senior Research Analyst, job grade 10.
