POSITION: Full-time, 12-month position based on funding.
JOB SUMMARY: This is a first level professional communications position working in the areas of writing, copy editing, marketing, public/internal relations, print production, and social media. Receives instruction, guidance, direction, and supervision from the Director of University Relations.
RESPONSIBILITIES: • Responsible for news releases and feature stories about students, faculty, staff, and University events (55% of time) including develop and execute a communication plan using traditional media and electronic technology (e.g. social media) to connect and inform target audiences; write and edit copy for public communications; identify, write, and disseminate news releases and feature stories about campus events, faculty and student research, accolades and other campus news; manage Insight Radio; work with campus photographer to obtain photos and video to be used with news releases and feature stories; take photos/video when campus photographer is not available; utilize photos and video to supplement news releases and feature stories; write and post news releases and feature stories on University Relations News website; disseminate news releases and feature stories internally within the University of Minnesota Crookston and the University of Minnesota System through the E-Update and Brief; and as appropriate share stories with Development & Alumni Relations and other units. • Media Relations (10% of time) including collaborate with the Director to disseminate news releases and feature stories to local, regional, and other media; develop and promote story ideas about campus events, students, faculty, and staff to local, regional, and other media; work with members of the media when they are on campus. • Assist with alumni relations (20%) including plan, write, and assist with editing of stories and features for the alumni magazine; and assist with photography, graphics, and coordination of printing and design needs. • Assist the Director of University Relations (15%) with local public relations efforts, system-wide efforts of University Relations offices across the University of Minnesota to enhance and reinforce system messages, governmental relations efforts, emergency communications, collaborative efforts between University Relations and Development & Alumni Relations; event planning including Commencement; student liaison, and other responsibilities as needed.
SUPERVISION: May be responsible for training and managing student workers.
MINIMIUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, art or related field, or four years combined equivalent education and experience. Final job offer contingent upon complete background check and verification of authorization to work in the United States.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree and one year experience working in communication, journalism, and/or marketing; excellent interpersonal, motivational, interpersonal, and time management skills; and basic computer skills.
