Responsibilities Assignment editor - work with our writers to spot and formulate engaging, only-at-Berkeley stories, assist in the selection of stories for coverage; monitor email, external media and social media for story ideas, leads and trends
Content and Copy editor - regularly correct our writers' copy for errors, awkward phrasing, verbosity and sleepy wording. Uphold AP Style and our in-house style; have a knack for writing compelling and creative headlines and cutlines; comfort with quick turnaround without sacrificing quality
Team leader - Supervisory skills to manage professional staff, set high editorial standards and motivate the team to produce compelling, accurate stories that win followers and make a difference; when needed, senior editor will lead by example, reporting stories and assisting with breaking news coverage. Ability to inspire teamwork and a collaborative environment
Editorial strategist - Create and maintain an editorial calendar; engage with the campus to help spread the word about our sites and our journalism; assist other management with campus-wide editorial initiatives; forward thinking in understanding the emerging tools and technology for the digital medium
Internal newsletter - collaborate with internal communications manager to assemble and distribute weekly internal email newsletter
Required Qualifications -Candidates should have a minimum of 10+ years of progressively responsible experience and exceptional skill in writing/editing/proofreading with online platforms;
-Four to 7 years supervising professional editorial staff;
-Sound news judgment and equanimity, especially in the face of breaking news and/or fast-changing situation;
-Excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated analytic skills; ability to translate complex material into compelling, easy to digest language
-Technical aptitude, including a firm understanding of Wordpress;
-A working knowledge of multimedia storytelling, social media and content promotion;
-Curiosity about and an appreciation of the educational and intellectual environment of a university, including a general understanding of science;
-Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Education and Training -Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or equivalent writing experience
