The Harvard Business School Business and Environment Initiative (BEI) is accepting applications for the role of Associate Director. BEI was founded in 2010 to serve as a hub for environmentally focused research, teaching, and discourse. By connecting world-class faculty, students, alumni, and practitioners, BEI works to deepen the understanding of the environmental challenges confronting business leaders and inspire new ideas and practical, effective solutions. Reporting to the Director of BEI, the newly created Associate Director role will strengthen engagement with two constituencies vital to BEI's mission—alumni and educators—building on their significant level of interest in business and environment-related endeavors. The Associate Director will also develop and implement a marketing strategy to bring faculty research and teaching about business & environment, and BEI's role as catalyst and amplifier, to the attention of the news media, business leaders, and the general public. A key component of this position will be to develop and manage relationships with HBS internal partners in Alumni Relations, Marketing and Communications, Harvard Business Publishing (HBP), and other School departments, whose support and engagement are critical components of success. Major areas of responsibility include:
Design, develop, and implement a comprehensive strategy for alumni engagement, including:
oCreate facilitative means through which to mobilize, engage, and connect alumni leaders in fields of practice with significant environmental considerations, including energy, agribusiness, impact investing, and finance.
oBuild on BEI's successful regional convenings that focus on the role of business leaders in the age of climate change. Plan events in cities where large numbers of alumni live and work, focusing on climate change risks and opportunities of greatest importance to alumni in those areas.
oExtend student/alumni engagement opportunities and strengthen alumni supports for students exploring environment-related business careers.
Design, develop, and implement a comprehensive strategy to engage faculty teaching and researching about business and environment at schools throughout the world, including:
oGain understanding of where the 700+ teaching cases with business & environment themes authored by HBS faculty are being taught, and undertake structured experiments to boost reach and impact of these classroom materials.
oEstablish and manage relationships with key counterparts within HBP higher ed, HBR group, and corporate learning divisions to define and advance shared goals.
Design, develop, and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy to elevate BEI's external presence, including:
oIdentify, develop, and share content suitable for key constituencies, building on BEI's social media, digital marketing, and online presence and experimenting with new tools and approaches.
oUndertake market research to identify thought leaders and key influencers and define targeted dissemination strategies to extend the influence of BEI's research output and information about related activities.
oWork with the HBS Initiatives team to advance CRM capabilities (e.g. Salesforce) to advance BEI constituent engagement and knowledge management priorities.

BA/BS required; 7+ years progressive experience in alumni engagement/development or programmatic role
The ideal candidate will have a proven record of accomplishment within a complex environment, with excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills. S/he will be a self-starter and have a passion for and experience in the field of business & environment. The candidate should have proven ability as an operational manager who can build on existing strengths and develop new strategies through an action-oriented, entrepreneurial, flexible, and innovative approach to operational management. The candidate must be self-motivated and creative and have the ability to work independently while establishing strong, collaborative team relationships. S/he should be an analytic and decisive decision maker with strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a customer-service orientation.
