The department of News & Research Communications is seeking a News and Research Writer. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed term professional faculty position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.
The purpose of this position is to communicate and promote general university, research and academic developments to external news media by identifying, developing and writing news releases, articles and other multimedia communications, including social media. This The News and Research Writer develops, cultivates and maintains a broad spectrum of state and national news media contacts to advance knowledge of Oregon State University among the media and promote coverage of the university. This position develops sources of knowledge and subject matter experts within the university to utilize as interview subjects within news reports and for suggestions of possible pertinent media news releases and other multimedia coverage. The News and Research Writer provides communications support to colleges, departments and/or units.
This position provides coverage of multiple colleges at Oregon State University. The News and Research Writer's primary role is to communicate OSU research news to audiences in ways that convey how the university benefits society. This position reports to the News Editor of the Office of News and Research Communications.
The News and Research Writer develops and coordinates news releases, feature stories, tips and advisories for assigned OSU colleges. The Writer also serves in a consulting role and gives professional advice and support to administrative leaders and communicators in assigned units; trains administrators, faculty, and staff within these units on news media and public relations issues. As part of this work, the Writer will collaborate with others in OSU News and Research Communications to assess and measure coverage results to assess how OSU news is used by the media.
To be successful, the Writer will frequently collaborate with News & Research Communications staff, staff members within University Relations & Marketing and campus communicators throughout the university, as well as administrators and faculty members in assigned colleges. Experience with a broad range of journalistic tools, AP style, and professional and ethical guidelines of journalism and public relations is fundamental to this role.
The Writer often contributes to multimedia elements in conjunction with interviewing and writing stories. These additional activities may include taking photos, conducting on-camera interviews and shooting video. Competency with social media platforms for amplifying news coverage to key audiences is essential. This position assumes primary backup role for the internal communications coordinator, including daily editing of internal OSU newsletter during the academic year and weekly during the summer.
