The George Mason University Office of Communications and Marketing is seeking a communications officer for its Communications team. We are looking for a skilled writer who can share compelling stories about our people, programs and research. This person should be a self-starter who also enjoys working collaboratively.
Candidates should be able to deliver sharp, punchy stories that are newsworthy, fun to read, and convey key messages about the university. Candidates should be as comfortable conducting interviews as they are pitching stories to news media.
Job responsibilities will include working with stakeholders across the university to find and tell stories; pitching stories and faculty to news media; drafting daily or weekly media lists; assisting with internal communications. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
Although all our communications officers cover stories from all the schools, colleges and units at the university, this position would be primarily focused on the College of Education and Human Development, the School of Business, the Honors College, and University Life.
Key responsibilities include:
Research, pitch and produce stories and content for The George newsletter, Spirit Magazine, university website, social media and other university communication channels.
Develop relationships with elite, national and regional media to raise Mason's profile through pitching faculty and stories.
Occasionally take photos or video at campus events.
Work collaboratively with the Communications team to use multimedia strategies to bring stories to life.
Bachelor's degree, preferably in communications, journalism or related field. or a combination of education and experience
Demonstrated years of professional experience or a portfolio of work that demonstrates writing proficiency in a deadline- and results-driven environment.
Excellent written, verbal and editorial skills.
Ability to manage deadlines with minimal supervision and to adjust to changing priorities.
Experience with media tracking software such as Cision or Meltwater.
Experience with web-based publishing.
Experience in higher education a plus.
