ResponsibilitiesThis position is part of a team responsible for the design and implementation of Public Affairs & Marketing initiatives, creating high-quality promotional materials designed to promote awareness within the campus community and to the general public of UC Davis Health's programs and services. Working under the guidance of the Art Director, the ideal candidate is a self-starter who strives to create effective design in accordance with corporate brand standards. This position provides the opportunity to be part of a creative team producing meaningful, exceptional work that is dedicated to improving lives and transforming health care. Designs and produces a wide variety of marketing materials within parameters of graphic standards and overall organizational priorities. Deliverables can include, publications, annual reports, newsletters, brochures, flyers, out-of-home, advertisements, static and animated digital ads, specialty items and other printed pieces.Determines the need for photography, illustration, charts, graphs, maps and other elements to enhance the design and to most effectively convey the message.Prepares complex electronic files for everything from full-color multi-page publications to large transit and vehicle displays.Re-sizes and/or reconfigures advertisements to meet specific requirements for placement in a variety of channels including print, digital, out-of-home, social media, etc.Uses a project management system to manage assigned workload, track progress and ensure that projects meet strict deadlines. Ensures entries are accurate and updated on a timely basis in adherence to department procedures.Works in collaboration with the project coordinator to ensure client needs and goals are met. Uses client service skills to accommodate changing dates, priorities, and styles. Senior Graphic Artist provides guidance to junior artists. Serves as a resource for design advice, brainstorming, concepting, and applicable software support and training. Required Qualifications:
Creative thinker with the ability to assess objectives, develop concepts, and translate ideas into successful graphic solutions.
Excellent design skills and demonstrated knowledge and understanding of all elements of effective visual communication, including legibility, hierarchy, grid theory, color theory and effective use of imagery and illustration.
Strong production skills with acute attention to detail to prevent errors in printing and digital delivery such as spelling, sizing, spacing, and consistency.
Ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced, deadline driven work environment and to remain flexible in a rapidly changing environment.
Positive team attitude with good listening and questioning skills. Diplomatic, tactful and flexible when art directed.
Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work both with a team and independently.
Critical thinking skills and proactive problem-solving/resolution skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to articulate and explain design thinking/concepts; to make effective presentations; to write clear, concise business memoranda; and have strong spelling and grammar skills.
Strong portfolio showing the ability to steer creative visions from concept to delivery.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in professional graphic design position.
Knowledge of production processes for a variety of media and knowledge of vendor requirements for a variety of products.
Knowledge of design and communications concepts and applicable software applications including Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator). Tertiary programs to have knowledge in include Microsoft Suite, PowerPoint and Word.
Sr. Graphic Artist:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in professional graphic design position.
Expertise in layout, typography, grid theory and visual hierarchy.
Advanced knowledge of design and communications concepts and applicable software applications including Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator). Tertiary programs to have knowledge in include Microsoft Suite, PowerPoint and Word.
Ability to art direct and supervise the work of printers and other outside vendors, consultants and specialists. Ability to lead and mentor junior staff.
Health care related experience
Skilled in working with Digital Asset Management systems
Experience with project management systems such as Wrike
Familiarity with web, video and multi-media production
