The Association for Psychological Science (APS), a DC-based scientific organization, seeks a highly motivated, detail oriented, and organized individual for the Director of Media Relations and Public Information position. This is a full-time position in our Dupont Circle headquarters that provides the opportunity to join a dynamic communications team in support of all aspects of the organization’s media and public outreach.
About the Position
Reporting to the Senior Director of Communications, the Director of Media Relations and Public Information
Oversees media relations, including strategy and execution, and multimedia content.
Serves as critical member of communications team, collaborating with the Senior Director of Communications, Design and Production Editor, and Editorial Coordinator on content and strategies for the Observer and other APS products as needed.
Represents the association to media organizations and groups that can benefit from awareness and understanding of psychological science and its relevance to their work.
Develops and maintains relationships with editors and journalists.
Writes and oversees the distribution of press releases on psychological research to media outlets.
Manages and writes content for the APS website.
Oversees staff and freelancers in creation of press releases, blogs, and related website content.
Manages news coverage at APS conventions, including vetting and registering reporters.
Serves as point of contact for APS board members and other APS VIPs in regard to public dissemination of their research; provides APS scientists with support in communicating with the media.
Keeps track of media coverage of APS and its members.
Collaborates with the Senior Marketing Manager to develop strategies and disseminate news and information through social media.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in journalism, media relations, public relations or a related field
8+ years professional experience in science-focused media relations, communications, public relations, and/or journalism
Exceptional writing skills, editorial judgment, and attention to detail
Proven ability to be a proactive and energetic force in a public-facing science communication role
Strong organization skills, leadership ability, and collaborative working style
Expertise in trends and best practices in media outreach for science dissemination
Familiarity with psychological science and its various audiences a plus
Proven ability to effectively communicate complex information, including scientific literature
