Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher degree). Five years of full-time experience working in Communications or Public Relations. Demonstrated experience writing feature stories or other written content that aligns with the strategic objectives of an organization. Excellent oral and written communication skills and presentation skills with a service-oriented attitude. Proven design and creative direction experience. Experience managing projects.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Communications Manager will directly report to the CIO and VP, Marketing and Communications/Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and will oversee external and internal communications for the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) with the aim of enhancing and optimizing DoIT's visibility and reinforcing its mission, consistent with the guiding brand principles of Stony Brook University. The purpose of this position is to actively promote DoIT's image and be the voice to serve internal and external stakeholders. The Communications Manager works to create a sense of community within DoIT.
The successful incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational skills with an exceptional attention to detail and be an ambitious visionary with a creative approach to communications and advancement strategies. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work as a member of a team in a dynamic environment. Incumbent should have experience working with a high degree of professionalism, integrity, discretion and tact. Experience successfully promoting a working environment that encourages creativity, efficiency, and receptivity to change. Experience building long-term relationships based on trust, predictability, and communication. Experience interacting with individuals at various levels within an institution as well as the general public when necessary. Experience maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive communications with discretion. Experience effectively multi-tasking in a fast-paced, dead-line driven environment with a high degree of accuracy and organization. Experience interacting with a culturally and ethnically diverse population.
Administrative Advisor: Partner with leadership to develop and implement DoIT's vision throughout the organization. Oversee the development and implementation of communication plans. Responsible for monitoring opportunities to advance DoIT's values and brand. Drafts and edits communication plans. Oversees the release of product and service announcements and coordinates the organization's response to media inquiries and requests. Oversee DoIT's online presence, so that all properties (including multiple websites, email campaigns, and online communities) are brand aligned, engaging and effective in achieving DoIT's goals. Oversee marketing campaigns that highlight and showcase the vision of DoIT. Advise on managing reputational risk and responding to negative overage. Work with operational areas to ensure that notifications of service incidents are provided to the campus community in a timely and appropriate fashion. Oversee the overall strategy and direction of events for DoIT; manage events sponsored by the office of the CIO and the Division.
Communications: Act as editorial director for DoIT's website, social media channels, and all other communications materials. Oversee the design, research, writing, editing, publishing, and distribution of print and web-based publications. Ensure publications conform to university publishing policies, editorial style, organization and appropriateness. Ensure message continuity, design, and tone for digital and print publications. Develop communications strategies and materials in connection with DoIT's strategic plan.
Administrative Liaison: Prepare preliminary budgets and cost summaries on an annual and periodic basis to manage communication and media costs. Serve as chief DoIT liaison with the University Marketing and Communications Office. Participate on university-wide committees and task forces to enhance visibility and reputation throughout the university.

This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
