Rowan University is in search of an assistant director of Media and Public Relations in the Division of University Relations. The department has several writers who cover a broad range of areas. This candidate, however, will focus on STEM-related topics and write copy for a variety of institutional publications.
Promote the University through media relations—developing story ideas, writing news releases and pitching stories to regional, national and international media
Work directly with deans of colleges, professors, researchers, students and the University’s executive leadership team
Coordinate the promotion of research activities across all disciplines, working directly with the Division of Research
Use multimedia story-telling platforms (i.e., social media, blogs, video) to promote day-to-day events/stories/activities through institutional priorities
Write advertising copy for targeted ads and broad-based branding campaigns
Write speeches and copy for the executive leadership team
Work with the emergency response communication team
Become an active member of the University community, serving on committees and attending events
Coordinate projects assigned to freelance writers and design professionals
Collaborate with University Relations colleagues and communication professionals throughout the University
Write department and feature assignments for Rowan Magazine
Report to the vice president for University Relations, and complete other duties as assigned by him.
Experience and requirements:
The candidate will have exceptional communication skills, including writing and editing: press releases, newsletters, Web content, social media postings, reports, speeches, and advertising copy.
3 (three) years of professional experience.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Occasional indoor and outdoor, night and weekend hours are required. Occasional travel also required.
Expertise with AP style
Writing samples: candidates should submit links to three to five published pieces. Finalists may be asked to submit additional pieces and will be required to complete a writing test/assignment.
Preferred experience includes: 5+ years of writing and editing, particularly in the STEM fields
Master’s degree preferred
