The Cochlear Center is a research center based in the Bloomberg School’s Department of Epidemiology that investigates the impact of hearing loss on public health and helps create and advocate for solutions (both at the individual and policy level) to mitigate this impact. The communications specialist will help plan, design, implement and manage various communications and public affairs activities with the goal of elevating the overall visibility of the Cochlear Center and building awareness of the Center’s activities including research findings, reports, policy advocacy efforts, and training opportunities on a variety of platforms, including digital, print, web, videos and social media.
The Communications Specialist will work closely with the Center faculty in collaboration with both the Bloomberg School media and PR and social media teams. This role will also proactively work with faculty, students and staff on the following duties:
Develop, write and design content for the web (including blogs, policy briefs, fact sheets).
Help prepare scientific and foundation grants and manuscripts.
Draft research news releases in close collaboration with the Bloomberg School media and PR team.
Develop and maintain the Center’s social media presence and interact with other parties in research, academia, industry, and government in collaboration with Bloomberg School communications and social media staff.
Prepare and produce the Center’s annual report.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Develop innovative and compelling content for multimedia materials (video, photography, tweets, text, blogs) that support the goals and objectives of the Center
Write, design and produce policy briefs/fact sheets, news releases, infographics, announcements, campaigns, brochures and other collateral (e.g., annual report) for the Center.
Assist with the preparation of scientific and foundation grants and manuscripts.
Help maintain the Center’s website by keeping information up-to-date, relevant and accurate.
Support the development of talking points, newsletters, presentations and other written materials for the Center.
Engage multiple audiences to increase visibility, interactivity and brand awareness.
Create engaging social media posts to drive users to the Center’s website, promote faculty, research, academic programs, events and to highlight and cross-promote other content.
Develop, update and maintain a public relations/social media/marketing calendar
Report monthly on social media analytics and recommendations on how to improve the reach and effectiveness of Center communications and messages on those channels.
Serve as a point-of-contact for external stakeholders, including the media.
Maintain email lists and databases of important audiences.
Provide communications support and technical assistance for faculty.
Ensure all communication projects and marketing efforts comply with the Bloomberg School and University Branding Guidelines and JHU Use of Name Guidelines.
Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, marketing, writing, journalism or related field.
Minimum of two years related experience required. Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Demonstrated experience managing written and visual content for related mediums and branded platforms.
Ability to work independently as well as on a collaborative team.
Must be able to prioritize assignments and produce results related to multiple projects and deadlines within the overall team project schedule.
Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Ability to reach out to internal and external stakeholders and audiences.
Quick, dynamic thinker who is able to anticipate communications needs and execute strong, professional writing and editing under tight deadlines.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to track and present results and manage a large volume of information.
Strong aptitude for managing written and visual communication in timely and effective manner.

This position may entail occasional domestic or international travel.
Strong interest in strategic communications with a background in scientific writing or journalism
Interest in public health, hearing, aging, and/or public health policy.
Excellent technical communications skills, both written and verbal, and ability to communicate to a range of audiences
Motivated self-starter who can identify news and promote important research to help shape the reputation and reach of the Cochlear Center.
