About the position:
The Office of Admissions is looking for a visionary leader with great entrepreneurial, strategic, and analytic skills, possessing finesse as a manger and a collaborator. Reporting to the Vice President for Enrollment Management and leading a staff of more than 70 full time employees, the Dean of Admissions provides the strategic direction and leadership for a results-oriented and innovative admissions program that is consistent with the goals and mission of our University.
The Dean is responsible for achieving new student enrollment goals consistent with the university strategic enrollment plan. The Dean is a member of the Enrollment Management leadership team and works closely with stakeholders such as the Office of Student Financial Aid, Integrated Enrollment Marketing, International Enrollment Partnerships, Intercollegiate Athletics, academic units, University Life, Information Technology Services and Academic Affairs to ensure Mason is adhering to all best practices to recruit and enroll an accomplished, multifaceted, and diverse student body.
The Dean of Admissions is responsible for the overall management and coordination of all recruitment and new student enrollment efforts for the university. The Dean supervises the following areas in Admissions:
Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions;
Decision Support for Graduate Admissions;
International Admissions (inclusive of Mason Korea and INTO Mason);
Office of Military Services;
Transfer articulation and first level domicile review;
The Washington Scholars Program;
K-12 Partnerships and outreach.
Responsible for shaping and achieving George Mason University's planned new student enrollment objectives;
Bring expertise, integrity, inclusiveness, and energy to the admissions function of George Mason University;
Provide a positive, collaborative, and teamwork-oriented leadership style, further developing a dedicated and talented staff to be stakeholder-focused and outcomes-oriented, optimistic, excited about change, responsive, innovative, analytical, and energetic;
Bring a strong commitment to serve the Office of Admissions' on-campus and off-campus stakeholders with an extra-mile service and results-oriented approach;
Routinely analyze data to shape strategic direction; regularly reassess the effectiveness of George Mason University's recruitment activities and initiatives while making appropriate adjustments in order to lead an effort that is continuously proactive and responsive to market forces and institutional priorities;
Work closely with the leadership of the K-12 Partnerships/Washington Scholars Program, and the Office of Military Services units;
Partner closely with the Director of Financial Aid in continuing the development of a creative, forward-thinking financial aid program that meets university enrollment goals;
Partner closely with the Executive Director of Enrollment Services to develop and execute enrollment strategies;
Build strong relationships across the university, so that admissions serves as an institution-wide tool to meet larger strategic objectives, and so that the department is continuously alert and responsive to assisting other deans, departments, and programs to meet their enrollment goals;
Harness new and existing technologies in support of both an optimally efficient operation and an impactful new student recruitment effort;
Build effective partnerships with the members of the high school counseling community across the country, so they can better understand and communicate Mason's academic programs and quality of life;
Build effective partnerships with community colleges in the Commonwealth of Virginia;
Promote frequent personal interactions with prospective students and their families by actively involving other members of the George Mason University community in a team approach to recruitment and admissions;
Bring strategic and tactical leadership and operational excellence to the Office of Admissions;
Engage the entire George Mason University community in the admissions effort.
Significant experience as an active participant in the leadership and management of an admissions office at a complex university; at least seven years is strongly desired;
Must have substantial supervisory experience, seven to ten years is strongly desired;
Must have substantial experience working in higher education, with at least five years preferred;
Capacity to lead and manage the multi-faceted interplay of marketing and recruitment strategies, enrollment goals, yield, and financial aid;
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituents;
Ability to manage change effectively and build teams to collaborate with university stakeholders;
Must be well-organized and detail-oriented;
Excellent skills in areas of fiscal responsibility; strategic planning; selection, supervision and development of personnel;
Ability to lead a process that is at once technologically and strategically advanced, as well as responsive to individual students and families;
Articulate, persuasive, proactive, and accountable in communicating with both internal audiences, including administrative offices and faculty, and external audiences, including prospective students and their families, and members of the guidance/college counseling community;
Strong grasp of the fundamental principles and applications of marketing and communications, including social media and other digital outlets;
Ability to assess risk, and a willingness to take calculated risks to achieve objectives;
Understand the value of technological innovations and to harness emerging technologies that can support the processes within admissions so as to attract and enroll the optimal student body;
Sensitivity to cultural issues in a diverse environment;
Willing to perform occasional travel as needed;
Significant experience working in student information and Constituent-Relationship Management (CRM) systems;
Flexibility and willingness to occasionally work outside of normal business hours and extended days with the ability to juggle competing priorities effectively;
Experience building student-centered processes and policies that both meet university goals and the needs of a diverse student population.
Creative thinker, and have intellectual curiosity and a competitive spirit in order to bring innovation and excellence to this key role;
Experience and understanding with online programs;
Experience and understanding of global campuses.
