The Senior Communications Strategist is part of the Strategic Communications team within the Division of Communications at Vanderbilt University and is a key contributor responsible for developing and implementing communications plans and tactics in support of the Division of Communications' strategic goals and priorties. This position leads communications strategy and execution for engagement with the Vanderbilt community, including students, faculty and staff. This includes leveraging storytelling expertise, gathering news, developing messaging and content, and coordinating dissemination of story packages across the division. Reporting to the Communications Strategy Director, the Senior Communications Strategist works with key campus partners to enhance Vanderbilt University's reputation and advance the university's mission as a premier academic research institution, which involves proactively building relationships and collaborating with faculty, staff, administrators and peers throughout the Division of Communications.
The Strategic Communications team within the Division of Communications designs and executes integrated communications strategies to protect and enhance Vanderbilt's local, national and international reputation, and positions the university as one of the world's leading academic research institutions through the distribution of compelling content across a variety of digital and traditional channels.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lead a team of Communications Strategists who are responsible for developing communications strategies designed to engage with and communicate about the Vanderbilt community.
Seek out compelling narratives to support the university's strategic communications goals.
Develop and implement integrated communications plans and coordinate with divisional teams to develop multimedia communications tactics that promote Vanderbilt University's faculty, staff, students, research and resources to a wide variety of audiences.
Develop and implement communications plans for multi-faceted division-wide projects in support of the Division of Communications' priorities and overall content strategy.
Build and maintain relationships with staff, faculty and administrators to identify compelling stories and opportunities to join the national conversation; advises deans, directors, faculty, staff on local and national external communications opportunities for their programs.
Project manage execution of all communications tactics to ensure efforts are coordinated and messaging is consistent across channels.
Facilitate the process through which each strategy is defined as a project with explicit scope, deliverables, milestones, drivers, stakeholders and subject matter experts.
Assist the Video and Photography team with story development and production and guides messaging.
Follow industry-related news and generate ideas to amplify content.
Demonstrate fluency with social media and project management best practices.
Provide communications support for specific divisions, schools, colleges, departments or centers of the university.
Plan and maintain editorial calendars for assigned coverage areas.
Coordinate resolution of project challenges by communicating effectively and professionally to leaders and colleagues across the division.
Develop content and messaging in coordination with the Editorial Strategy team.
Monitor and report out project performance metrics and results internally and to key stakeholders.
Provide overall support as needed and assigned for department priorities.
Demonstrate understanding of the university's mission, values, goals and priorities and an ability to ensure that all are considered in developing communications strategies.
Communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of audiences--including faculty, students, leadership, staff, alumni, suppliers and agencies.
Efficiently and effectively manage multiple, complex and results-oriented projects with quick turn-around requirements.
Adhere to confidentiality and business ethics; demonstrate outstanding judgment and discretion.
Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
