The William James College Office of Marketing and Communications is seeking an experienced writer, media relations professional, and content creator to increase awareness and communicate impact through news and media relations; social media and web content creation; and visual and interactive communications. The ideal candidate will be a compelling storyteller, ideally with the ability to work across multiple channels, who actively seeks to understand trends in mental and behavioral health, psychology, and higher education.
Please note: Due to concerns related to COVID-19, this position will be working remotely three days a week and onsite two days a week until further notice.
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Assistant Director aids in the development, oversight and implementation of public relations plans and activities to support the strategic initiatives of the College. Essential responsibilities include identifying topics of public interest related to our mission and creating and disseminating news and public information on these topics; building relationships with College subject matter experts and media; promoting events and expertise through multiple channels; serving as a primary and secondary contact for news media outreach and inquiries; and managing earned, shared and owned media content, including contributing to the College’s print magazine, Rapport, and news and web content for the WJC website. The Assistant Director will produce regular reports on communications activities, be a frequent contributor to social media plans and efforts, and will work closely with the College’s Marketing and Advancement teams.

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, business, English, or a related field;
5-8 years of relevant experience in public relations, journalism, or related communications.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word and with web content management systems, such as WordPress.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to practice sound judgment in communicating effectively with a diverse and high-level group of individuals in a diplomatic and professional manner;
Ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues and partners across the College;
Must be able to manage several projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines in an environment characterized by rapid change;
Discretion and an ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Photography, video production, and desktop publishing skills are highly desirable, as is prior experience in higher education or nonprofit organizations.
Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required.
Special projects and other duties as assigned.
