The Annenberg School of Journalism at the University of Southern California seeks a highly qualified adjunct instructor to be ourÂ Media Center Coach focused on health and wellness coverage
Description: Work in a fast-paced news environment with journalism students in the Media Center at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism who are producing news stories on daily and long-term deadlines for video, radio, podcasts, social media and digital on the website. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge and experience covering the topics the Health and Wellness Desk tackles: mental health for students, quality of life issues and student eating disorders, along with drug use, suicide and grieving.Â
This position requires someone who is patient and nurturing to students who have little to no journalism or production experience. Applicants must be available for 10 hours per week.
Helping to guide student journalists in identifying and pitching story ideas, assigning journalists and keeping to schedules.
Working closely with student editors to identify daily and longer-term news priorities and develop a budget to share with the newsroom;
Attending weekly editorial meetings and offering feedback to student journalists and editors and producers.
Working one-on-one with student reporters on story development, finding sources, interviewing, verifying facts, writing and editing, choosing quotes, and the final production of their stories.
Assessing student work and interactions with an eye toward ensuring diversity, equity and inclusion in the newsroom at all times.
Providing consultation on legal, ethical and usage questions.
Conducting workshops for students during the first four weeks of the semester and on occasion through the semester as needed.
Degree required: BA or BS
At least five years of journalism experience, ideally focused on health and wellness.
Spanish speaker or multilingual a plus.
Familiarity with AP Stylebook.
