Reporting directly to the Director of Communications, and coordinating closely with the communications and programming staff at each Center, the communications officer is responsible for:
All communications, including the overall direction and development of website content for the Columbia Global Centers and all nine Centers web pages;
Ensure that written and web-based content on all these sites is consistent in tone and in line with the Centers' branding and style guide;
Spearhead and develop visual communications material about the Columbia Global Centers;
Manage internal and external vendors and partners, such as CUIT, communications leads at schools, Columbia alumni groups, the University's Office of Communications and Public Affairs, and others as designated by the Director of Communications.
Develop, manage, or assist in all communications, media, and visibility efforts across the global centers network
Edit and maintain the central website of the Office of Global Centers, including the following:
Engage in daily review and update of content for the central website, and include content updates from the nine global centers
Review individual centers' sites on a regular basis and ensure that all content is properly written and is consistent with the Columbia Global Centers branding guidelines
Edit news, event listings, profiles and initiatives, edit photos and create photo galleries, edit videos, design graphics, and other media content
Assist in managing the Office of Global Centers' media relations and manage all of its various social media platforms as well as assist the nine Centers with their social media platforms
Coordinate and develop material about the Columbia Global Centers including brochures, e-newsletters, presentation templates, and any other printed or online material
Act as a guide and resource to the nine global centers as they develop communications materials and content strategies
Act as a liaison with all partners on campus related to media, communications, and technology
Bachelor's degree and or its equivalent required and a minimum of four years of related experience required. Bachelor's degree in the communications, marketing, or information technology field preferred.
The ideal candidate would possess both an institutional awareness of Columbia University as a highly renowned academic institution and be cognizant of its institutional goals, objectives and presence worldwide.
Excellent written communication skills necessary, particularly in web communications, and a demonstrated understanding of the technical concepts involved in implementing web communications; native English speaker strongly desired; an ability and flexibility to work in an environment in which staff is spread across many time zones; an understanding of social media management, video production, and web technologies: including, but not limited to, familiarity with html, Photoshop or InDesign, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, video conferencing (Zoom or GoToMeeting), Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/LinkedIn/Youtube/Soundcloud, media placement monitoring, and other digital communications tools. Advanced usage of CRM platforms such as Mailchimp or Salesforce highly desired. Intermediate Microsoft Office skills, specifically with database management using Excel and/or Access.
