MSU’s Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research (ICER) and Office of Research and Innovation (OR&I) are hiring a Communications Manager to develop and implement a range of informational, public relations, and marketing activities to inform the public and the MSU community about ICER and OR&I issues and events, primarily relating to work done by MSU researchers. This position will include the creation of articles and press releases, still images and videos, and social media campaigns, in coordination with other campus units at the department, college, and university level. It will also include the management of student employees.
In this position you will: plan, create, and manage informational, public relations, marketing activities, and social media campaigns, in order to inform the public and the MSU community about ICER and OR&I activities. Identify and interact with researchers, faculty, and staff to solicit news items and interviews as sources for media materials. Compose, edit, design, and produce written, audio, and video materials for media and publications in order to inform the public and the MSU community about ICER and OR&I issues and events. Assist with web development within ICER and OR&I. Serve as a liaison with other University departments, including University Relations. Coordinate and approve the work of student artists, writers, photographers, and videographers and monitor work in progress.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Telecommunications, or Public Relations; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations, composing, editing and publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation; or radio production; or computer programming/technology; experience managing content for social media channels; experience in university communications positions that include video production and editing of science content. Expertise in standard editing software, such as the Adobe suite and Final Cut Pro.; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired qualifications include: Master’s degree in Advertising, Public Relations, Marketing, Media and Information, or closely related field +3 years of experience in university communications positions that include video production and editing of science content; experience coordinating small video production teams; experience in managing informational social media campaigns; experience with web development and content management.
