The Computing Sciences (CS) Area at Berkeley Lab has a new opening for an experienced, creative and strategic Science and Technology Writer to join its communications team. Working in a fast-paced, competitive research community, this position will communicate highly complex scientific and technical accomplishments to a broad audience and demonstrate a strategic and creative approach to communications using traditional and digital media. This position will work as part of a communications team that supports three divisions and the area management, comprising a total of 300+ employees, working directly with staff at all levels. The team also supports and provides content for four websites within the CS Area, including an area website, one for the Computational Research Division (CRD), as well as one for each of the national user facilities in the Area: the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) and the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet).
What You Will Do:
Work independently to identify and write news and feature stories within the Computational Research Division, NERSC, or ESnet.
Create and deliver timely information to a variety of audiences, including CS Area staff, Berkeley Lab employees, Government Relations Staff, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the broader scientific community and general public. This includes content about research results, accomplishments, annual reports, presentations, collateral, and messages from leadership.
Work with CS Area directors and other communications staff to make sure stories achieve the strategic objective.
Work with Department of Energy and Berkeley Lab communications staff to promote stories to journalists and on social media.
Develop and execute a social media strategy for delivering research results and accomplishments. This includes strategically building an audience of Department of Energy staff, research institutions, government officials, media, vendors, as well as HPC, Computational Science and Networking researchers.
Contribute to the development of a monthly newsletter of CS Area highlights that will go to DOE program managers, CS area staff, Berkeley Lab Directorate, etc.
What is Required:
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Corporate Communications, English, or a related field or a combination of education and experience in technical and non-technical writing and editing in news, magazines, publications, or online communications.
Advanced science writing, editing, proofreading, interviewing, story research and concept development skills for clearly communicating highly complex scientific, technical accomplishments and computer hardware and software innovations to a range of audiences.
Ability to effectively create, organize and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
Experience interacting with high-level internal and external contacts to establish working relationships needed to produce publications for release.
Strong interpersonal communication, teamwork, collaboration and client service skills, with demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a diverse group of colleagues.
Proven ability to be a creative and critical thinker and problem-solver.
Demonstrated experience managing digital and print products from inception through production, including setting and meeting editorial and production schedules and strategic priorities. Proven ability to take initiative and work independently.
General understanding of high-performance computing, networking, science, and engineering.
Proficient with both print and electronic publishing technologies such as web publishing software, content management systems, and digital communications practices.
Experience cultivating online communities and using social media, blogs and multimedia tools desirable.
Knowledge of Photoshop and Hootsuite.
This is a temporary part-time, limited appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Cannot exceed 900 hours within a rolling 12-month period.

This position will be remote initially, but limited to individuals residing in the United States tentatively until 2021 due to COVID-19. Once the Bay Area shelter-in-place restrictions are lifted, work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
