The Research Alliance for New York City Schools is an independent research center housed at NYU's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Founded in 2008, the Research Alliance conducts rigorous studies on topics that matter to New York City's public schools. We strive to advance equity and excellence in education by providing nonpartisan evidence about policies and practices that promote students' development and academic success.

The Research Alliance invites applications for a Communications Coordinator from individuals with a strong interest in education policy, practice, and research; experience with online communications and social media; outstanding writing skills; and a proven ability to collaborate. We seek candidates from diverse backgrounds, particularly from groups that are underrepresented in education research.

Job Description

The Communications Coordinator will work closely with the Director of Communications to implement strategies that engage a variety of audiences. Our communications efforts are designed to share findings and lessons from specific Research Alliance studies; build the overall visibility and credibility of the Research Alliance's work; and promote the use of evidence in NYC's education system. The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for producing website, e-newsletter, and social media content; managing contact lists; assisting with the production and dissemination of publications; supporting the development of presentations, data visualizations, etc.; and tracking communications-related outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Digital communications. Manage website, e-newsletter, and social media accounts. Write and post website content using Steinhardt's content management system, respond to staff requests for website updates, and develop strategies for increasing traffic. Ensure that all new material on the website meets digital accessibility guidelines. Work with NYU Steinhardt's web development team to identify and coordinate any needed website development or repairs. Maintain a strong database of contacts for dissemination of reports and other news. Write, design, and send monthly e-newsletter.
  • Publications. Proofread and layout publications for print and digital release. Help plan and execute report release and dissemination strategies. Support development of other written products, including grant proposals, research instruments, and memos to the Research Alliance Steering Committee, funders, and research partners.
  • Branding. Maintain the Research Alliance's visual identity standards by training staff; developing new documentation tools and templates as needed; and encouraging adherence to visual identity guidelines. Design and procure branded marketing materials. Produce thorough and user-friendly documentation of internal branding/communications standards and processes.
  • Analytics. Measure and analyze communications outcomes, including website and social media analytics; media mentions; and others as appropriate.
  • Events. Support the planning and coordination of (virtual, and eventually in-person) meetings and events, including Steering Committee meetings held three times per year.

 

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in public policy, education, communications, or relevant social science field.
  • Attention to detail under pressure. Ability to manage competing demands and complete tasks under time constraints.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills; editing experience a plus.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and work in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products; basic knowledge of web design and production, including experience with content management systems and Google Analytics; knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Familiarity with digital accessibility standards a plus (the person hired for this role also will be expected to complete NYU trainings related to digital accessibility).
  • Design-savvy, preferably with some knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and/or experience creating data visualizations.
  • Interest in/knowledge of NYC's education system is essential.

Compensation:

Starting salary: $48,000 annually , Full or part-time options may be available, as well as a  generous benefits package including tuition remission (more information here).
