Journalist product manager for innovative community journalism project
Wick Communications
No, the job title is not a typo. (If you don't know what a typo is, stop reading now.) Wick Communications is expanding its NABUR initiative, which combines community journalism with reader engagement via our own social media platform. NABUR, or Neighborhood Assisted Bureau Reporting, offers aspects of investigative reporting/feel-good local news combined on a site similar to Nextdoor or Facebook Groups. This project is funded in part by the Google News Initiative. As a journalist product manager in the Fergus Falls (Minnesota)/Wahpeton (North Dakota), NABUR project you will be coordinating online discussions, conducting experiments in news coverage through conventional storytelling (print, video), experimenting with alternative storytelling techniques (databases, polls, anything you can imagine), crafting curated newsletters and organizing virtual and in-person events (pandemic permitting.) Our NABUR sites are key to our strategy of putting readers front and center in our news coverage. We launched this project in April of 2020 and have well-established NABUR sites in three markets (Green Valley, Arizona; Sierra Vista, Arizona; and Wenatchee, Washington) and are about to launch another in Montrose/Delta (Colorado). The position will be based in the market (relocation assistance available), although it may begin with remote work depending on the status of the pandemic. You’ll be a part of the editorial team at our print/digital newspapers at The Daily Journal (Fergus Falls, Minnesota) and the Daily News (Wahpeton, North Dakota). You’ll also collaborate with journalist product managers at our four other NABUR sites. What qualities do you need to apply? We’re looking for someone who comes ready to break new ground and push our industry forward. You should be tech-savvy and be a whiz with social media. Journalism training/experience is vital, though equally important is an appreciation of the role of the free press and a dedication to continuing it. We’re looking for self-starters who will come ready to innovate. Experience with product development or website management is a plus. Wick Communications is a family-owned media company nearly 100 years old that has a print/digital presence in about a dozen nationwide markets. This is a full-time position with benefits. The application deadline is February 28. Before applying, please visit our latest NABUR site at nabur.myheraldreview.com, create a free account and see what you think.
