Full Time - Upper Management Level (Managing Editor, General Manager, Manager, Director)
The Capital Journal in Pierre, South Dakota, is looking for more than a managing editor.
But we’ll get back to that. First we want to tell you about where we live.
WHERE WE ARE: Pierre is the state capital and the center of state government. One of the nation’s most beautiful capitol buildings sit squarely in the middle of the city, perched atop bluffs on the eastern bank of the Missouri River. Forget what you’ve heard — summer lasts more than a weekend in South Dakota. But there’s plenty to do year-round — hiking, fishing, boating on the Missouri, scuba diving at Oahe Dam, dozens of parks and museums, and streets filled with art and history. (And did you know we have a Flaming Fountain — or that journalist Tom Brokaw is from these parts?) With hundreds of state officials and workers flocking to the area during the legislative session, Pierre (pronounced peer) never lacks for great restaurants and night spots. Get outside the city and you’ll find wind farms, tribal nations and quaint towns dotting the beautiful landscape. The Capital Journal has been covering it all since 1881.
WHO WE NEED: So let’s get back to you. We need a leader, a mentor, a teacher, a visionary. We want somebody who believes journalism is public service, and that strong journalism can change the course of a community and make life better for the people who live there. We want somebody with a notable track record but who still has plenty of room to grow. Why? Because our company, Wick Communications, is running into the future. We used Google funding to build our own social media site, already rolled out in four of our markets (soon five, and it’ll be coming to Pierre, too). We are doing video, podcasts, newsletters and plenty of traditional social media. We do what works and leave behind what doesn’t. We’re not afraid to fail but we’d rather succeed. We succeed a lot.
NUTS AND BOLTS: We use BLOX CMS (Content Management System by Town News) for writing and posting online. Knowledge of this system and any or all of the above is a big plus. Wick offers support through its editorial director and dedicated editors in 11 states, including nearby Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota. We need an editor who recognizes good stories that help the community set the agenda, address uncomfortable issues, are relevant and meaningful, and that tell the rest of the state what we’re all about.??
SALARY AND MORE: As part of Wick Communications, we offer a competitive package of pay and benefits, including medical, dental and 401(k). We are an equal opportunity employer.?Interested? Send a resume and a cover letter laying out what you can bring to the table to Publisher Jeffrey Hartley: firstname.lastname@example.org.
