Academic Advisor and Student Services Support Specialist

The Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution is seeking a qualified candidate for the full-time classified position of Academic Advisor and Student Services Support Specialist. The position will be part of the Undergraduate Student Services staff in Fairfax and will report to the Director of Undergraduate Student Services. The Student Services staff at the Carter School commits to creating on-going, personal and purposeful educational partnerships with students and colleagues. Committed to a student-centered approach, we intend to contribute to student success by providing resources and by coaching students to develop the skills required to become life-long reflective learners, capable of effective self-advocacy, and successful in reaching their educational and career goals. This position requires occasional weekend and evening availability and will encompass the following responsibilities:

Academic Advising:

• Meet with prospective, new and returning Conflict Analysis and Resolution majors and minors to discuss degree requirements, Mason and Carter School policy and procedures for academic actions, development of academic skills, course scheduling, field experience, career readiness, and transitions;
• Knowledgeable about all student resources and when appropriate, connect students to offices that provide additional support;
• Maintain accurate and timely student records in accordance with Mason and Carter School policy; coordinate with offices across campus to support student needs;
• Identify and assist academically at-risk students.
  
  

Student Services Support:

• Coordinate with faculty and student services staff to promote, organize, and facilitate undergraduate program events;
• Coordinate activities that support student success and enhance the undergraduate student experience;
• Collaborate with internal and external organizations to develop partnerships that could result in enhanced experiences for undergraduate students;
• Liaise with organizations to gain relevant and current career advice for Carter School students;
• Collect information for, curate, and distribute the twice monthly Carter School undergraduate program newsletter; maintain current undergraduate and undergraduate alumni listservs;
• Review and provide updates to the undergraduate website;
• Serve as the point of contact for phone and email inquiries;
• Assist with social media initiatives and crafting of communication shared by admissions, marketing, and recruitment.
  
  

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience;
• Proficiency with MS Office programs;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Excellent interpersonal skills to include a collaborative approach to projects;
• Exceptional attention to detail.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree or relevant experience;
• Experience with communication technology such as social media marketing, newsletter creation, or website content management;
• Experience in the educational environment, higher education, academic advising, student development, student affairs, and/or a field related to Peace and Conflict Resolution;
• Ability to work independently on projects;
• Highly organized and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment;
• Engaging and professional presentation skills;
• Strong cross-cultural understanding or experience with a variety of student populations.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
